Northwest suburban baseball roundup

Barrington got hit with back-to-back solo homers by visiting Oak Park-River Forest in the second inning of its nonconference baseball game Wednesday.

The Broncos responded in an even more forceful manner.

Anthony Brignola had the big blast with a tiebreaking grand slam in a 6-run fourth inning and Barrington (2-0) went on to an 8-2 win in a game called in the top of the sixth because of darkness.

Brignola's second homer of the year came with one out. Gus Handler capped the outburst with a 2-run homer that hit off the roof of the house in right-center field.

Sophomore shortstop Jack Scheffler started the comeback with a solo homer in the second inning. Johnny Day went 2-for-3 and Jim Cook went 2-for-2.

Winning pitcher Robby McDonnell had 3 strikeouts in 4 innings, and Tim Oakley struck out the side in the fifth.

Maine West 11, Meadows 2: Ryan Tuntland had 3 doubles and 4 RBI and Tommy Ross had 2 doubles and 4 RBI for Maine West (3-1) in the nonconference win at Rolling Meadows (1-1).

John Perez got the victory for the Warriors. John Carlson doubled and had an RBI for Meadows.

St. Viator 19, Trinity (Fla.) 11: St. Viator's 4-run first inning matched the Lions' total runs in their first two games, as the Lions pounded out 20 hits in the second round of the Westminster Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Jake Mastrangeli led the Lions (2-1) by going 5-for-5 with a double and 5 RBI. Julian Sipiora went 4-for-6 with a double and an RBI.

The Lions also got 2 hits apiece from Kevin Gannon, David Alameda and Phil Bar. Brett Kay had a hit in his only at-bat, collected 2 RBI and scored 3 runs.

Junior Anthony Quagliano earned his first varsity victory, pitching 2 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits with 1 strikeout.

Elk Grove 16, Maine East 1: Ryan Martinski, Danny Lopez and Carl Sugihara went 3-for-3, and Tony Logli was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI to lead a 21-hit attack for Elk Grove (4-1) in the five-inning nonconference win.

Winner Kyle Pfister (2-0) went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, Colin Semler was 2-for-3 and J.J. Kaczynski was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Pfister went 2 innings and combined with Donny Duschinsky, Martinski and Sugihara on a 3-hitter.

Cary-Grove 10, Palatine 7: Andy Prombo, Dan Haze and Tommy Galvan had 2 hits apiece for Palatine (1-2) but Cary-Grove broke a 7-7 tie with a run in the top of the fourth.

Joe Campe had a 2-run double in a 3-run second and Prombo had a 2-run single in a 4-run third.
