Golden Apple winners named:

Three area high school students are among the 100 named Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois by the Golden Apple Foundation. The winners include Kelsey Hargesheimer of Des Plaines, a student at Maine West; Eliana Goldsmith of Buffalo Grove and Stevenson High; and Ryan Ehmen of Carpentersville and Barrington High. The winners agree to teach for five years at an Illinois school in need in exchange for financial assistance for four years to attend one of 53 public and private Illinois universities, enrollment in summer programs that include teaching internships and enhanced teacher preparation and continual mentoring by Golden Apple Award-winning teachers. The scholars will be inducted May 2 at DePaul University.

Mall has stimulus package:

The Arboretum of South Barrington shopping center has its own economic stimulus plan: an evening of giveaways and bargains taking place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. tonight. As part of the "Shop and Give Me 20" event, the first 150 shoppers to register at Azar Jewelers starting at 5:30 p.m. will receive $20 gift cards to use anywhere in the mall. Many retailers are offering free wine, champagne and food; free makeovers; fashion shows; and special one-time-only bargains. Shoppers can also register to win a Journey diamond pendant from Azar. The high-end Arboretum shopping area opened last September at Routes 59 and 72.

Tollway work closes streets:

Ballard Road from East River Road-Bender Road to Trailside Lane in Des Plaines will be closed during daytime hours from today through Saturday, March 28, to remove the overhead east portion of the tollway bridge superstructure, Des Plaines and tollway officials said Tuesday. The closure will begin about 7 a.m. each morning and end at about 5 p.m. Detour signs will be posted. The main detour will involve using East River-Bender, Golf and Potter roads to get around the closed section of Ballard Road. In addition, Touhy Avenue at the I-294 underpass just east of the Touhy Avenue-River Road intersection will be closed during overnight hours, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. tonight, Thursday night and Friday night, for bridge demolition work. Detour routes will be Talcott Road, Devon Avenue and Des Plaines River Road.
