River rising in Des Plaines

The Des Plaines River is expected to crest in Des Plaines at 7 feet at 7 p.m. today, depending on how much rain fell overnight, according to the National Weather Service. While that is 2 feet over flood stage, it is a foot below where flooding becomes a major concern. The city's public works department is providing sand and sandbags at Big Bend at the cul-de-sac and at Big Bend and Hawthorne Lane, at Junior Terrace and Hawthorne Lane, and at River Drive and Stewart Avenue. Flooding and nonemergency flood calls in Des Plaines should be directed to (847) 391-5396.
