Outage caused by fire

A power outage that affected 7,000 customers Wednesday in Lisle, Woodridge and Downers Grove was caused by a fire at a substation, authorities said Thursday. A ComEd spokesperson said the substation, at 22W731 71st St. in unincorporated DuPage County, had six feeder lines that were affected by the fire. Power went out around 5:14 p.m. and was restored by 7:05 p.m. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Home buyers fair

The DuPage Homeownership Center and the DuPage County Department of Community Services will sponsor the 17th annual Free Home Buyers Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the DuPage County Administration Building, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. The fair will offer free workshops on all aspects of buying a home, including a session titled "Short Sales and Foreclosed Properties" at 1:30 p.m. For details, call (630) 260-2500 or visit dhoc.org.

Fenton paints Field House

Fenton High School students will paint the Field House purple today at its Hoops For Hope benefit. Fenton's boys basketball teams will take on the Bulldogs of Riverside Brookfield while raising funds for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. Throughout the evening, raffle tickets will be sold and donations to the relay will be collected by the girls basketball team. The Bison Boosters will donate some of their concession stand sales as well. Special purple Hoops For Hope event T-shirts will be sold while supplies last. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with the sophomore game at the high school, 1000 W. Green St., Bensenville.

Lombard talks downtown

Lombard residents and business owners will be able to register their views on the future of downtown until March 1. The village has completed its public forums but will continue to accept comments on its Web site at VillageofLombard.org. Comments will be used to help determine future development and other efforts in the downtown.

Public art reception slated

Lombard will play host to a public reception to "Celebrate Art" before the March 5 village board meeting. The reception will be at 6 p.m. in the community room followed by a program at 6:30 p.m. Works by students from Lombard Elementary District 44 will be featured in the art show, which will remain on display for viewing through April 3 at village hall, 255 E. Wilson Ave. The invited to attend the art show and reception.
