Bart's 9 3-pointers propel Cary-Grove

By Dave Hess

Swish, swish, swish.

That was the sound as Cary-Grove junior sharpshooter Liz Bart tickled the twine for nine 3-pointers in scoring 29 points to lead the Trojans to a crucial 67-60 win over Jacobs in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball game in Cary Friday night.

The 9 treys by Bart is a school and FVC record.

"It was an amazing feeling to make that many 3s," said Bart."My teammates did a great job of penetrating and getting the ball to me in good spots to shoot.

"It was all adrenaline. I wasn't even thinking about it."

Bart, who was 9-of-11 from beyond the arc for 81 percent, scored 15 points in the first half and 14 points during the final 16 minutes.

"Liz was just in the zone tonight," said Cary-Grove coach Rod Saffert. "It was fun to watch. Liz did a good job of getting open and we did a good job of penetrating and dishing the ball to her. I told the girls after the game we can't rely on Liz to shoot like that every night."

Jacobs coach Ed Haugens thought his team could have done a better job on Bart.

"We kept telling the kids not to let her set up to shoot," said Haugens. "We didn't do a good job of getting a hand in her face. The girls played hard, but we need to play a little smarter."

The Trojans (18-5, 5-1), who made 11-of-15 shots from 3-point range for 73 percent, finally took control of the game in the fourth quarter.

Nursing a slim 46-44 lead after 3 quarters, Cary-Grove scored the first 6 points of the final 8 minutes courtesy of pair of 3s by Bart to extend its lead to 52-46 with 6:44 remaining in the game.

The Trojans' biggest lead was 65-55 after a putback by Lizzy Dyrek with 1:46 left.

Claire Jakubicek backed Bart with 15 points for the winners.

Maria Tamburrino paced the Golden Eagles (16-8, 4-2) with 25 points, including 20 in the first half. Keri Bultman added 13 points and 9 rebounds for Jacobs.
