Bartlett man charged with DUI after accident

Bartlett police say a drunken driver was responsible for a crash that sent him and another vehicle's occupants to a hospital Friday afternoon.

Sgt. Jessica Crowley said Douglas Abts, 23, of the 100 block of Amherst Drive in Bartlett, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to yield while turning left and failure to wear a safety belt. Crowley said Abts' blood-alcohol content was not yet known Saturday.

Crowley said Abts was in Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield with serious injuries that weren't considered life-threatening Also in Central DuPage for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries were a man and woman, both in their 70s, who were in the other vehicle involved in the wreck.

Abts was driving a 2002 Mazda Tribute west on Stearns Road when he made a left turn and collided with a 2003 Dodge Caravan about 3:45 p.m. Friday, Crowley said. The Caravan was being driven east on Stearns when Abts turned onto Nicole Drive in front of the vehicle.

Crowley said Bartlett police reports didn't immediately indicate Abts' whereabouts before the crash. Stearns Road was closed for about one hour during the Friday afternoon rush hour.

Abts is to appear Feb. 17 in DuPage County circuit court.
