Leak injures one

A hazardous material leak in a Schaumburg industrial park caused one minor injury to an employee who came in direct contact with the substance Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred at a business on the 1000 block of National Parkway, Schaumburg police Sgt. John Nebl said. A tank truck carrying a toxic substance developed a leak that was confined to the parking lot of the business, he said. Schaumburg firefighters who responded to the scene were able to seal the leak.

Accident inquiry continues

Elk Grove Village police Tuesday continued to investigate an accident involving a funeral procession that killed Carol A. Struebing, 82, of Elk Grove Village. Meanwhile, the condition of the driver of the car Struebing was in, June A. Lippert, 79, of Elk Grove Village, was upgraded to fair and she was transferred out of intensive care, a hospital spokesman said. Lippert's vehicle was hit by a pickup truck in the procession when she went through a green light, according to police. Sgt. Jeff Prior said police are verifying conditions related to the procession such as whether the pickup had its headlights on and whether the lead vehicle was following the requirements of the Illinois Vehicle Code that need to be met to allow a funeral procession to go through red lights to determine if tickets should be issued. Elk Grove Village doesn't have its own criteria for the processions and police were not accompanying this procession, Prior said.

Wheeling warns of burglaries

Following three burglaries last week on the west side of Wheeling, crime prevention officer Scott Laverd is warning residents to take precautions, including making sure all windows and doors are locked, even when people are home. The burglaries were on Willow Trail, Coral Lane and Cedar Drive. All occurred in the late afternoon hours and entry was made by crawling in through a window. Laverd noted that burglars usually work during daytime hours, don't like to make noise, don't want to be seen and don't like to work hard to break in. Ways to deter burglars include alarm systems, trimming landscaping to eliminate hiding places, upgrading to deadbolt locks with at least a one-inch bolt, leaving on a loud TV or radio, closing blinds and having a dog.
