Arnold sets mark for Lake Park
The record was a foregone conclusion, but Samantha Arnold was pleased to get the 4 points she needed for the milestone out of the way early in Lake Park's 60-35 win at Elgin Tuesday night.
The 6-foot-4 forward, a four-year varsity starter committed to Michigan, scored 2 inside baskets in the first quarter to become the all-time leading scorer in Lake Park girls basketball history, eclipsing the previous record 1,906 points held by 1994 graduate Kelly Miller.
"It's awesome, such a good feeling," said Arnold, who finished with 18 points. "Just to have my teammates around me, playing with me. They do everything for me. Without them I couldn't have done this.
"I've put in a lot of work over the years building up to this. It's a great accomplishment. Since I came in here as a freshman, I've had great people surrounding me the whole way."
Arnold scored 11 points in the first quarter to stake Lake Park (14-4, 4-0) to an 18-13 lead. The Lancers pulled away with a 15-8 second quarter and outscored Elgin 14-8 in the third to take command.
Senior point guard Caris Allan scored 13 points and senior center Ellen Holton added 11 points for Elgin, which fell to 3-13 overall and 1-3 in the UEC.
