The Consecration of the 2008-2009 kindergarten class at Congregation Beth Judea took place at the synagogue on Tuesday, Oct. 21. This ceremony is the confirmation that a child is now officially enrolled in Jewish education - the beginning of what will be a lifetime of Jewish education and learning.

Following the Hakafot, the students, with their teachers, were invited up for an Aliyah. All the students stood under a large Tallit and the parents joined in saying Shehchiyanu. Then the students sang their three songs for consecration. Then, Rabbi Howard Lifshitz and Education Director Anna Besser spoke and handed out Sisterhood's presents - a mezuzah necklace for each child.

Queen of the Rosary School's eighth-grade Spanish class commemorates the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with bilingual Mass at 8:15 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Queen of the Rosary Church. The Rev. Edward Pelrine, pastor, will read the Gospel and prayers in both Spanish and English, and eighth-graders Martin Sarmiento and Milton Moscoso will read Scriptures and petitions that they have translated into Spanish. During the homily, eighth-graders will enact the story, while eighth-grader Jessica Morrill narrates the story in English. Music will include lyrics in both Spanish and English.

Congregation Beth Judea presents the fourth night of Hanukkah at the annual Family Festival Wednesday, Dec. 24 in the Social Hall of the synagogue. The evening will begin at 5:45 p.m. with a kosher Chinese dinner followed by a concert at 7 p.m. The concert will feature Chicago's own Maxwell Street Klezmer Band. The cost for the dinner and concert is: adults (13+) $25; youth (7-12) $18; child (3-6) $15; children 3 and under are free. The cost for the concert only is $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Elk Grove Baptist Church, 801 Beisner Road, Elk Grove Village, hosts "The Ultimate Christmas Party," an interactive festival for the entire family, Saturday, Dec. 20, beginning at 7 p.m. Families will gather in the sanctuary for Christmas carol singing, then visit various party central stations throughout the church building. The games, activities and snacks may remind friends and families of a summertime vacation Bible school, although for this evening, parents are expected to stay and participate with their children, rather than dropping them off. Families can also make Christmas cookies together and have group photos taken, dressed in costumes reminiscent of the times of Christ.
The Ultimate Christmas Party concludes with a mimed re-enactment of the birth of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of Luke. There is no registration fee for the event, nor are reservations needed. This is, after all, a party.

Lord-of Life Lutheran Church in Schaumburg has received a wish list from the children at The Lutheran Services of Illinois facilities. Members of the church will select a name or names, and buy Christmas presents for these children. The presents will be returned to the church and the committee in charge will then have a St. Nicks Party on Saturday, Dec. 6, and will wrap the presents and return them to Lutheran Services. The Ismaili Muslim community of Glenview and greater Chicago celebrated the inauguration of its new 26,000-square-foot Jamatkhana (house of worship and community center) on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 100 Shermer Road, Glenview. Guests of honor included Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, village of Glenview President Kerry Cummings, and leaders from the Ismaili community. A plaque commemorating the ceremony was unveiled as part of the proceedings and guests were given a tour of the facility.
The Ismaili Jamatkhana's 9.3-acre site will include a prayer hall accommodating up to 900 members, administrative offices and spaces for classrooms and social gatherings. The facility's social hall may also be available, for educational purposes, by residents of Glenview and neighboring communities.

Representatives from Hispanic parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago, will carry torches blessed by Fr. The torch runners are expected to pass through the suburbs of Rosemont, Schiller Park, River Grove, Elmwood Park and several other Chicago neighborhoods.
