Glenbard South's balance sinks Knights

The formula for the Glenbard South girls basketball team so far has been to have everyone share the load of scoring, not just one star standout.

The Raiders didn't stray from that once the Western Sun Conference action started, as just one girl, Kim Schwerdtmann, scored in double-digits while a few more came close, as Glenbard South beat Kaneland 50-37 Tuesday in Maple Park.

Schwerdtmann led all scorers with 12 points, followed by Meghan Pipal and Patrice Hicks (9 points each) along with Alyssa Yasak (7 points).

"Up to this point, it's been very spread out," Glenbard South coach Julie Fonda said. "A lot of people participating. This is actually a low-scoring game for us. We've been in the 60 range, and that's out goal, to score 60 (or more) points a game."

For the first three quarters, the game was kept fairly close. Kaneland (1-5, 0-1) started the game on a 7-0 run, which was its biggest lead of the game. Glenbard South got hot at the end of the third after an 8-0 spurt and led by as much as 38-30 after a free throw from Yasak.

The Raiders (5-1, 1-0) had their best showing in the fourth quarter after ending the game on a 9-0 run, mainly on free throws from Schwerdtmann. Pipal scored the game's final three points, as Kaneland managed only 5 points in the final quarter.

"They adjusted nicely at the end and executed well," Fonda said.

Chassidy Mangers led Kaneland with 11 points. Alyssa Galvan scored 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds while Katie Hatch pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go with her 9 points.

"The difference was turnovers. We turned the ball over too many times," Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said. "The effort was there, but we didn't play very smart in terms of taking care of the ball... instead of one person not having a good ballgame, it snowballed and 4-5 people tried to do too much. Glenbard (South) is a good team and they are well-coached, but they took advantage of that."
