Help a Huntley charity help the needy
A Huntley charity is asking for your help.
In April, I wrote about how Fiat Missionaries was getting a new warehouse at Route 47 and Route 62.
Now, the warehouse is up and running, and the charity is seeking volunteers to help collect, sort and deliver donations.
Since 2002, Fiat Missionaries has delivered food, furniture and financial counseling to area families in need.
The charity is looking for drivers who can pick up donations and make deliveries as well as someone who can help the group apply for grants.
Fiat Missionaries, which distributes through local charities and churches, is seeking donations of nonperishable food and furniture. You can buy donated furniture from Fiat at a discount; the proceeds fund the charity's operations.
The charity is also hoping a local landlord can donate or help defray the cost of a storefront location where Fiat can accept donations and distribute items.
If you'd like to make a donation, volunteer or find out more about Fiat Missionaries, call Roger Klein at (773) 443-7355.
Arndt to focus on teaching: This week, I caught up with Community Unit District 300 Superintendent Ken Arndt about his retirement.
Arndt announced earlier this month he will retire at the end of the 2010-11 school year. The District 300 school board this month approved Arndt's retirement package and the compensation he will receive until he retires.
Arndt said this week his retirement in 2011 will allow him to spend more time teaching at the university level.
The superintendent said he has been leading classes in management at local campuses, including Aurora University and Argosy University in Schaumburg.
"By 2011, I'll have 35 years of service in," Arndt said. "Life is short."
A ride to O'Hare: Starting in November, area seniors will be able to call Grafton Township to schedule a ride to an O'Hare International Airport connection point.
A shuttle will take seniors in Huntley and Grafton townships to Country Inn and Suites at Randall Road and I-90, where they can catch a bus to O'Hare.
Rides to the hotel will be available 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and must be scheduled 24 hours in advance. The ride costs $3 each way.
To schedule a ride, call Grafton Township at (847) 669-8500. You can find information about the bus route to O'Hare by visiting vangalderbus.com or calling (800) 747-0994.
Church stages ensemble classic: Before Jimmy Stewart starred in the Christmas classic "It's a Wonderful Life," he was part of the excellent ensemble cast of "You Can't Take it With You," the George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart stage hit that director Frank Capra adapted for the screen in 1938.
The prolific players at the First Congregational Church in Huntley are staging the family comedy for their annual Fall Dinner Theater.
The performances will be at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8 in Fellowship Hall at the church, 11628 E. Main St. Tickets are $12 and should be reserved in advance by calling (847) 669-3691.
