Lake Park runs past Elgin
Stormy weather delayed the start of Friday's game between Lake Park and Elgin, but both teams showed they were ready once play began.
In the first quarter alone, the two teams combined for over 300 yards of offense and scored 5 touchdowns. Once things settled down the Lancers picked up their third straight victory with a 43-23 win over the Maroons in an Upstate Eight Conference game at Memorial Field.
"We were not expecting to get long touchdowns on one play," Lake Park coach Andy Livingston said. "It's nice to do but the only problem with that is that you are putting your defense right back on the field."
The Lancers struck first on their opening possession. Kevin Thomas ran the ball in from 9 yards to cap a 7-play drive. Thomas led the game with 150 yards rushing on 14 carries.
The Maroons didn't go away quietly as they roared right back. On the first play of it's next possession, Elgin quarterback Tom Roth scored from 51 yards out, tying the game at 7.
Quick-strike Lake Park scored on the first play of its next 2 possessions, including a 59-yard pass from Larry Nawrot to Ardie Monaco.
After Elgin grabbed a 15-14 lead on a 10-yard pass from Roth to Jamal Cook, Chris Jasinski put the Lancers up for good when he broke free from 66 yards out.
"We did what we could" Maroons Coach Dave Bierman said, on how the weather effected his team. "We couldn't alter our game plan too much, and defenseviely we have to react to the movements and we had a hard time with that."
The Lancers then pulled away, scoring 21 unanswered points. Nowrat ended the game with 104 yards, 2 passing touchdowns and 1 rushing touchdown.
