Middle school hosts run: Last fall, I attended the first Scott Wherry Memorial 5K Run/Walk at Algonquin Middle School, where Wherry was assistant principal for two years before he died unexpectedly last year.
The run is now an annual event. The second annual fundraiser will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.
The run/walk starts at the middle school, 520 Longwood Dr., and continues along the McHenry County bike path.
Registration costs $20. You can register online at d300.org/web/schoolsites/algonquinmiddleschool.html or starting at 8 a.m. at the event.
Proceeds from the event will go into a scholarship fund for Wherry's young children.
Adopt a dog at library: The Huntley Area Public Library is encouraging local residents to adopt a dog this month.
You can visit the library's reference room to find pictures of dogs and cats that need a home.
The library is also collecting supplies for the Animal House Shelter in Huntley. This past summer, I wrote about the shelter's efforts to save animals that were left homeless after floods in parts of the South and Midwest.
You can donate to the shelter online at animalhouseshelter.com/donations.asp.
The library is also asking local families to share their pet adoption stories by picking up a form in the reference area and turning it in at the reference desk.
