Deadline to submit Halloween events

Today is the deadline to submit notice of a Halloween event for the community such as a haunted house, haunted trail, hayride, etc. which will be open to the public?

The Daily Herald would like to include your Halloween event in our listing of Halloween Happenings.

Fire departments to hold open houses

Nicor Gas will participate in Fire Department open houses in Crystal Lake, 100 W. Woodstock, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 and Elgin Station 2, 650 Big Timber, from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 11. Open houses will be held in other local areas as well.

"Natural Gas: Safety at Home Exhibit" will be presented to provide information on natural gas safety at home. Community members are invited to participate in fun, family-friendly events that cover a wide variety of home safety measures that help prevent fires. Nicor Gas will display hands-on exhibits, such as examples of replacing brass appliance connectors, in highlighting key natural gas safety tips.

Each fire station will raffle 12 carbon monoxide detectors. Fun activities for children include a prize drawing for a Lego Fire Station (includes a multiroom fire station, two firefighting vehicles and four firefighters) after successfully answering a few simple, but important questions about natural gas safety.

Nearly 100 Nicor Gas "Employee Ambassadors" have volunteered to participate in open houses as a way to spend time in the communities in which they work and live. This is the fourth consecutive year that Nicor Gas has supported Fire Department Open Houses.
