Wauconda High to celebrate homecoming

Wauconda High School hosts its homecoming parade and game today. The parade kicks off at 9 a.m. from Wauconda Middle School at Slocum and Osage, and travels to Church, Church to Mill, Mill to Main and north on Main to the high school. Wauconda's football teams will play Antioch, starting with the junior varsity at 10:30 a.m., followed by the varsity game at 1 p.m.

Candidates forum Sunday

Candidates for some races covering all of Lake County and judgeships are to appear in a forum at 2 p.m. Sunday at Warren-Newport Public Library, 224 N. O'Plaine Road, Gurnee. American Association of University Women and the Daily Herald are event co-sponsors. Slated to appear are: Lake County Circuit Court Clerk Sally Coffelt, a Republican, and her Democratic opponent Cynthia Pruim Haran; Republican Lake County State's Attorney Michael Waller and his foe, Democrat Michael Jacobs; and Lake County Coroner Richard Keller, a Democrat, and his Republican challenger Michael Oster. Candidates will make opening remarks, then answer questions from panelists and audience, followed by closing statements. Judge candidates in the two new subcircuits for the 19th Judicial Circuit will give three- to five-minute statements on why they are qualified. In Subcircuit 1 covering the Waukegan area, incumbent Republican George Bridges is facing Democratic challenger Jay W. Ukena. In Subcircuit 2, covering the Gurnee area, Democrat David S. Weinstein is facing Republican incumbent Valerie Boettle Ceckowski. A videotape of the forum will be available by calling Jo-An Sabonjian at (847) 727-5158.

Diamond Lake Elementary District 76 officials are running a voter-registration drive through Oct. 7. If you live in the district and want to vote Nov. 4 but haven't registered yet, you can do so at Fairhaven School, Diamond Lake School or West Oak Middle School. Volunteer here if you dare

The Lake Zurich Park and Recreation Department seeks adult volunteers to work at its upcoming haunted house. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Makeup and costuming is provided. The haunted house will be open 7:30 to 11 p.m. Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25 at the Barn in Paulus Park, 200 S. Rand Road. Participants will need to arrive early to get into character. Open house Sunday

The Samaritan Counseling Center, newly located at 800 Hart Road, Barrington, hosts an Open House, 4 and 6 p.m. Sunday. The center is a not-for-profit organization that provides pastoral counseling for people of all economic groups and religious beliefs. The Open House will include tours of the new 3,000 square-foot office space and a chance to meet the center's staff. A special ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., with refreshments following.

HARPS picnic Sunday

The Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society in Barrington Hills hosts a community picnic, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, at 331 Old Sutton Road. The event will feature special guests Lisa Dent, A US99 radio personality and Tommy Turvey, an equine extremist. The picnic will also include live entertainment, Timmermans Drill Team, pony rides and a white horse parade. Admission is $5.
