Hampshire makes easy work of DeKalb tourney

The Hampshire girls volleyball express just keeps rolling along.

Despite missing starting outside Jen Hubbe, who was attending a wedding, the Whip-Purs made fairly easy work of the field at the DeKalb tournament Saturday, racking up five more wins and running their season record to 13-0.

"It was a nice win for us," said Whips coach Karen Whitehouse. "With Jen out, (sophomore) Chessa Osiecki stepped in at outside and did a nice job for us today."

Hampshire downed Oswego 25-19, 25-14, Hinckley-Big Rock 25-14, 25-12 and then DeKalb's "B: team 25-11, 25-14 in pool play before handling Plainfield South 25-15, 25-15 in the semifinals and West Carroll 25-18, 24-19 in the championship.

Osiecki served 17 aces on the day for the Whip-Purs while Amy Wehrs had 41 kills. Kara Wehrs added 38 kills and 60 assists for Hampshire.

St. Edward at Effingham: St. Edward's girls volleyball team had a tough weekend at the Effingham tournament, finishing 1-4. The Green Wave (3-6) fell to Bishop Chatard 25-16, 27-25 before beating St. Louis Visitation 25-13, 25-17 on Friday. On Saturday, the Green Wave lost to Hermann (Mo.) 25-19, 25-11, fell to Sciota Prairie 25-20, 25-14 and then lost to Owensboro (Ky.) 25-16, 27-29, 15-9. Katie Yohn led St. Ewdard with 32 kills, 29 digs, 23 assists and 20 blocks combined throughout the tournament. Sarah Norman (18 kills) and Kristen Haggenjos (20 kills , 22 digs) also contributed for the Green Wave. Margie Haggenjos led on defense with 41 digs while Rachel Varley posted 30 assists.
