Fall affords comfortable weather to be outside, enjoy some fun activities and explore nature. McHenry County Conservation District offers numerous free programs each month for children, families and adults. Trail of History: Advance group tickets for McHenry County Conservation District's annual Trail of History are on sale now. The Trail of History, a living history re-enactment of the northwest territory between 1670-1850, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18 and 19 at Glacial Park, 6316 Harts Road, Ringwood.
Groups of 10 or more can purchase discounted tickets for Saturday's, Oct. 18, Trail of History at Brookdale Administrative Office, 18410 Route 14 in Woodstock or at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake. Advance group tickets are offered at a 25 percent discount: $4.50 for adults; $1.50 for children ages 6-12 and seniors ages 60-plus. Tickets must be purchased by Oct. 3 for mail order and Oct. 10 for pickup. Regularly priced tickets will be available for purchase at the event: $6 adult, $2 child/senior and children 5 and younger are free.
Glacial Park is on Harts Road, seven miles north of McHenry off Route 31. Gates close at 3:30 p.m. to allow visitors time to make the one-mile walk to the encampment site. Migratory Madness: Flock to be a part of Migratory Madness with local bird enthusiasts on a search for migratory birds stopping over at Glacial Park. This adult program has openings in the evening session from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11 and the morning session from 8 to 10:30 a. m. Saturday, Sept. 27. Participants can share notes and refreshments afterward at the Powers-Walker House. Bring binoculars and field guides if you have them.
Of Bogs and Fens: Find out why Boger Bog, the most recently opened site, is actually a fen. The explanation and the history of the site is part of this morning walk for adults held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13.
