Library hosts summer reading fair

It's only a flesh wound.

The Huntley Area Public Library is hosting a medieval fair Aug. 16 to mark the end of its summer reading program.

The library has hailed this year's program as an overwhelming success, with more than 3,600 people participating - an increase of 18 percent over last year.

From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the all-ages fair will feature games, food, prizes and medieval entertainment - including music and a juggling court jester.

You could win one of three suits of armor in the friends of the library's silent auction. You can also try on medieval hats made by Lady Joan Caton.

During the fair, the library will hand out door prizes and announce the winners of the Summer Knights and Dragon Tales grand drawings.

Charity seeks volunteers:

A McHenry County charity is seeking volunteers to help local senior citizens get the medical treatment they need.

Faith in Action of McHenry County, which helps seniors live independently, is looking for volunteers who can drive seniors to dialysis centers, where they can get treatment for kidney disease.

The nonprofit organization has seen an increase in the number of seniors who need dialysis - especially in Huntley, Marengo and Union.

The charity offers a variety of services for local residents over 60, from yard work to home visits, but it receives the most requests for transportation.

District to unveil new school:

Community Unit District 300 is inviting you on a tour of its marquee construction project, the new Hampshire High School at Big Timber and Ketchum roads.

The first class of students will attend class at the new, state-of-the-art building this fall, while Hampshire Middle and High School is undergoing renovations to become solely a middle school.

The new high school is hosting a grand opening from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 24.

All families, district residents and staff are invited to the dedication ceremony. The school will offer guided tours and refreshments after the dedication.

The new Hampshire High School is located at 1600 East Big Timber Road, next to Gary D. Wright Elementary School.

Outing raises cash for library:

Who knew golf could be so lucrative?

The Friends of the Huntley Area Public Library raised almost $10,000 last month from its second annual Golf Outing Fundraiser.

The event, which featured golf, food, a raffle and a silent auction, was held at the Pinecrest Golf Course.

The Borhart family team of Garry, Glen, Len and Barry won the golf tournament for the second year in a row.

Proceeds from the event will help the library offset the cost of expansion.

It's the final countdown:

There's less than two weeks left for Huntley Unit District 158 and the district's teachers union to reach a deal - if they want a new contract by the time school starts Aug. 25.

Chop chop.
