McHenry County Conservation District notes

Summer Programs

There is still plenty of summer left to get outside and enjoy some fun activities and explore nature. McHenry County Conservation District offers numerous free programs each month for children, families and adults.

Wild Things Day Camp: There are still openings in the Conservation District's Wild Things Day Camp geared for young teens ages 12-15 being held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 4-7 in the wilds of Pleasant Valley and Marengo Ridge Conservation Areas. Teens are challenged to build their outdoor skills and learn more about the natural world. The week's events end with a campout and night hike under the stars.

Children's Storytime: Children ages 4-7 and their parents can listen and learn at Children's Storytime, from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" will be read followed by theme related activities, a craft and a snack.

Dog Days of Summer: It's called the dog days of summer, but do you know how many different species of canines call McHenry County home? Do they all howl?

All ages are invited to find out more about canine lifestyles and eating habits through stories, games and a short hike at the Dog Days of Summer Program from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 1 at Prairieview Education Center. Participants should wear long pants and long sleeves.

Marvelous Moths: Come out and discover the differences between a moth and a butterfly at the Marvelous Moths all ages program from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at Prairieview Education Center. Explore the prairies and woodlands to find which moths live here in McHenry County. Participants should bring a flashlights or headlamps and wear long pants and long sleeves.
