Wrap: Jay's goal earns Rams tough 'W'

Grayslake North made its cross-town rival earn its playoff win.

Seeded fifth in the Class AA Mundelein girls soccer sectional, Grayslake Central got a goal from Kelly Jay to edge No. 11 Grayslake North in the teams' regional semifinal at Libertyville on Wednesday night.

Grayslake Central advances to Friday's 6 p.m. regional final against No. 3 Libertyville, a 5-0 winner over Grant.

"We had several players really play, probably, the best they have played all season," Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "Sophomore Danielle Wohlfeil, senior Alyssa Burke, juniors Haley Stojak and Alyssa Smith, as well as freshmen Ashleigh Wonsil and Kim Shurtliff all played a great game and really made it difficult for Central to find any success, as well as kept them under some decent pressure."

Libertyville 5, Grant 0: At Libertyville, Felicia Gonzalez scored twice for the third-seeded Wildcats.

Michel McCracken, Caitlin Wagener and Allie Roeber also scored, while Erin Waehner earned credit for her ninth shutout. Wagener, McCracken and Mackenzie Jaroch had assists.

Libertyville (11-3-2) plays No. 5 Grayslake Central in the regional final at 6 p.m. Friday.

Stevenson 4, CL Central 0: At Crystal Lake South, the fourth-seeded Patriots scored all of their goals in the second half to defeat No. 13 Crystal Lake Central in a Class AA regional semifinal.

Michelle O'Brien, Shana Manning, JoJo Kurth and Marley Luskin tallied for Stevenson (10-6-1), which will play in the regional final at 6 p.m. Friday against No. 5 Cary-Grove or No. 11 Crystal Lake South.

Kelley Moran, Ali Hall, Missy Halinski and Colleen Grady had assists. Courtney Levy made 7 saves in earning her eighth shutout.

Lakes 4, Johnsburg 1: At Lakes, the eighth-seeded Eagles received goals from Sarah Bartlett, Alex Neal, Ashley Chernich and Brittany Mooney in their regional semifinal.

Jenny Mason, Mooney, Neal and Bartlett all had assists, and keeper Jessica Schroeder made 10 saves.

Lakes (13-8-1) plays top-seeded Mundelein for the regional title at 6 p.m. Friday at Lakes.

Mundelein 6, Zion-Benton 0: At Lakes, Courtney Bestler scored twice in the opening half for the top-seeded Mustangs.

Warren 10, Harvard 0: At Warren, Natalia Jovanovic scored a school-record 30 seconds into the regional semifinal for the seventh-seeded Blue Devils.

Sophomores Jovanovic and Kerry Eddy both had hat tricks for Warren, which advances to the regional final for the third year in a row and will play No. 2 Carmel at 11 a.m. Saturday at Warren.

Sarah Bruketta added 2 goals.

Softball

Libertyville 3, Lakes 2: Toni Kintzel's solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning snapped a 2-2 tie in the North Suburban Conference crossover.

Leanne Kaczmar's 2-run single in the third had pulled Libertyville even.

Danielle Kaczmar struck out four in earning the win, and she also had 2 hits, including a double. Kintzel had a pair of hits, as well, and Kat Bernard added a double.

Wauconda 3, Stevenson 0: Sara Super pitched a complete-game 3-hitter, as the Bulldogs won the North Suburban crossover.

Stephanie Olson tripled and doubled for Wauconda (18-9), while Katie Born also had 2 hits. Super struck out two and didn't walk a batter in improving to 10-3.

Antioch 13, Zion-Benton 2: Allie Anttila went 3-for-4 with a double, and Samie Seamon was 2-for-4 with a double for the Sequoits in the North Suburban crossover.

Ashley Mysliwiec pitched 6 innings in earning the win.

Antioch improved to 22-11.

Johnsburg 7, Grayslake N. 5: The host Knights erased a 5-0 deficit by scoring four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to force extra innings.

But Johnsburg plated a pair of runs in the 10th to win the Fox Valley Fox Division game.

Amanda Leon was 2-for-5 for Grayslake North (10-17, 6-9). Jamie Breitweiser had a double.

Vernon Hills 8, Lake Zurich 7: In a preview of today's North Suburban Conference championship game, the visiting Cougars scored a run in the ninth to win the crossover.

Megan Kubacki was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI for Vernon Hills (27-5). Marci Pasquesi (double, RBI), Alyssa Dougherty (double) and Jessica Schwartz (RBI) each had 2 hits for the Cougars.

Pasquesi pitched all 9 innings for the win.

For Lake Zurich (23-4), Chrissie Wichmann and Katie Buczynski each had 3 hits. Coryn Schmit, Stephanie Hoff and Kim Lacke each had a pair of hits. Schmit, Megan Mattera and Buczynski each tripled for the Bears.

Mattera, a freshman call-up, pitched 6 innings in relief, striking out six.

Warren 20, N. Chicago 0: Sam Berrios and Kayla Hurd combined on a 5-inning no-hitter in the North Suburban crossover.

Warren was paced offensively by Alex Booker (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 3 runs scored); Nicole Bohn (2-for-2, 3 RBI, 3 runs); Kellie Kraft (2-for-2, 4 RBI, double); Sarah Clauser (2-for-2, 2 RBI, double); Jenna Anderson (double); Megan Carlyon (3-for-3, RBI triple); and Julie Evans (3-for-3, 2-RBI triple).

Baseball

Stevenson 2, Wauconda 0: Matt Robin struck out 11 and allowed only 3 hits in a complete-game effort for the visiting Patriots.

Walt Weiner paced the offense by going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Stevenson (14-14) got doubles from Michael Donovan, Jason Douglas and Andrew Meister.

Josh Hartnett went the distance on the mound for Wauconda (10-15).

Antioch 9, Zion-Benton 6: Andy Danna and Logan Kent hit home runs for the host Sequoits in the North Suburban crossover.

Danna and Ken Karagiorgas both went 2-for-4 with a triple. Max Quinnett was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Karagiorgas (4-4) threw 6 innings for the win, allowing 3 earned runs. He struck out nine.

Lake Forest 8, Grant 4: A.J. Spohr led off the North Suburban crossover with the first home run of his career.

Gerik Wallsten was 4-or- with a double for Grant in the loss. Ryan Thorsen pitched well in relief, holding Lake Forest to just 1 hit in his 4 innings of work. Thorsen also struck out seven.

The Scouts scored 4 runs in the first and four more in the third.

Carmel 19, St. Patrick 2: Jordan Sivertsen homered and tripled for the Corsairs in East Suburban Catholic Conference action.

Brian Siedlecki was 3-for-3 for Carmel (24-5, 13-3), while Sivertsen, Donald Stopka and Joe Pudlo each had 2 hits. Siedlecki and Pudlo had doubles.

Grayslake C. 11, Grayslake N. 10: Mike Gentile doubled home Shawn Tobie with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Matt Schmidt had 4 hits, including 2 doubles, for Grayslake Central (17-12). Tobie and Sean Seiler each had 3 hits.

Stephen Kalina homered for Grayslake North.

Boys volleyball

Stevenson d. Lakes: Matt Litwin slammed 6 kills, and Brandon Palmer posted 8 digs and 4 kills, as the Patriots won 25-12, 25-11 in North Suburban Conference action.

Jason Giecek was 36-of-36 setting with 15 assists for Stevenson (20-14, 7-2).

Libertyville d. Antioch: Chris Risley had 9 kills for the Wildcats in their 25-5, 25-17 North Suburban win.

Libertyville improved to 16-17, 5-4.
