Briefs: District 300 elects officers

Community Unit District 300's school board officers will retain their positions for another year. The board this week approved Joe Stevens as board president, Karen Roeckner as vice president and Anne Miller as secretary. The officers will serve for the 2008-09 school year. The board will elect new officers after the spring 2009 elections. Under a new policy the board recently adopted, the officers elected in 2009 and subsequent years will serve two-year terms.

Police' Memorial Day today

The public is invited to join police officers from several departments in the northwest and west suburbs who will gather in West Dundee this evening for the annual Peace Officer Memorial Day celebration. The event, which honors police officers who've died in the line of duty over the past year, will feature an honor guard and flag presentation, prayer readings

and keynote address by Schaumburg's Tom Jensen. His son, Jared, was working for the Colorado Springs, Co., department when he was shot and killed while chasing a suspect in 2006. Tonight's event also will feature a display of law enforcement equipment in the parking lot. Participating departments include Schaumburg, Lake in the Hills, Itasca, Prospect Heights, Hoffman Estates, Sleepy Hollow and the Cook County bomb squad. The observance takes place at First Congregation Church of Dundee, 900 S. Eighth Street/Route 31. The equipment will be on display starting at around 5 p.m., with the program beginning at 7 p.m. Nearly 200 officers throughout the country died while on the job in the past year.

Sale aids mission work

Trinity United Methodist Church, 1647 Ravine Lane in Carpentersville, will conduct its "Huge Rummage Sale and Bake Sale" Friday and Saturday. There will be a silent auction and a $3 bag sale on Saturday. Sale hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. Money raised by the auction goes to global and local missions.

Cary opens skate park

The Cary Park District will host a grand opening for its new skate park at 1 p.m. Saturday. The event includes the ribbon cutting, demonstrations, live music and open skate at the park in Lions Park at Silver Lake Road off Three Oaks Road in Cary. Call (847) 639-6100.
