Wrap: Hendricks, Carmel sink St. Pat

Carmel got a home run and a double out of Kevin Hendricks en route to a 10-3 baseball victory over St. Patrick on Monday.

Hendricks drove in a total of 4 runs.

Teammates Jordan Sivertsen, Bobby Lyne and John Zeffery also had doubles while Brian Siedlecki and Donald Stopka each had 2 hits.

On the mound, Joe Pudlo, who allowed no walks, got the win for the Corsairs, who move to 22-5 overall and 12-3 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.

Mundelein 9, Grant 1: Dillon Smith and Kevin Barber each had 2 hits, including a triple and a double respectively, to lead the Mustangs to victory.

Pitcher Justin Piasecki got the win on the mound for Mundelein.

Lake Zurich 3, Wauconda 0: Pitcher Brock Simon rolled up 10 strikeouts over 6½ innings to lead the Bears to the win.

Joey DeBernardis came into the seventh with runners on first and second and shut the door to get his third save.

DeBernardis also was tough at the plate. He had 2 hits -- a home run and a double -- and drove in 2 runs.

Vernon Hills 8, Lake Forest 5: Sophomore pitcher Scott Kempel was called up to make his first varsity start and did not disappoint. He rolled up 5 strikeouts to lead the Cougars to victory.

Jamie Manhard got the save.

Kempel helped his cause by going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Teammates Zack Schwartz and Brad Schnitzer added 2 hits apiece.

Stevenson 5, Antioch 4: With the score tied in the bottom of the seventh, Matt Goll drove in the winning run to give the Patriots the victory.

Goll had 2 hits on the game.

Meanwhile, Stevenson pitcher Scott Firth went the distance and rolled up 8 strikeouts.

Warren 11, Lakes 4: Warren jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and pounded out a total of 15 hits to get the nonconference victory.

Ryan Pyles blasted a grand slam home run and Chad Johnson added another home run.

Ryan Economos and Aaron Dahlke led the Blue Devils (15-12) with 3 hits apiece while Pyles, Johnson and Tony Roberts each had 2 hits.

One of Economos' hits was a triple.

On the mound for Warren, Sean Kennedy went 5 innings and rolled up 5 strikeouts to get the win.

For Lakes (13-13), Randy Ratajczyk had a double.

Crystal Lake Central 5, Grayslake Central 4: Crystal Lake Central pushed a run across in the bottom of the seventh to edge Grayslake Central.

The Tigers had scored 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.

"We didn't close this game out when we had the chance," Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen said. "We made too many mental mistakes in key spots and it cost us. We knew Crystal Lake Central was not going to quit and they came up with timely hits when they needed them."

The Rams (16-12) got 2 hits from Angelo Gargano, Kevin DeRue and Sean Seiler and a double from Jordaan Williams.

Softball

Grant 3, Mundelein 1: Heather Ruetsche was busy on Monday.

She drove in 2 runs in the fifth inning that proved to be the difference for Grant, and she pitched the last three innings in relief for starter Brianna Brugioni.

Grant (10-14) also got a home run from Courtney Joerns.

Mundelein was led by Jordan Lundsten, who belted a home run.

Grayslake N. 16, Grayslake C. 3: In the crosstown battle, the Knights were rolling up the big hits.

They got a home run from Jamie Breitweiser, a triple from Carly Borders and doubles from Mindy Runge, Samantha Meyers and Samantha Fletcher.

Amanda Leon also added 3 hits (3-for-3) for the Knights (9-15).

Borders, Grayslake North's pitcher, got the win.

For Central, Kelly Silver and Monika Wedick each had doubles.

Antioch 6, Stevenson 4: Pitcher Ashley Mysliwiec got the win and also drilled a home run for the Sequoits, who were up 6-0 through two innings.

Mysliwiec went 3-for-3 on the day.

Meanwhile, teammates Candice Schmidt, Allie Anttila and Melisa Ori added doubles for Antioch (21-11).

For Stevenson, Erica Castriano blasted a 2-run double in the fourth inning.

Gennie Duffy also had a double for the Patriots (17-15).

Lake Zurich 3, Wauconda 2: Wauconda rallied, scoring 2 runs in the top of the seventh, but fell just short.

The Bears got 9 strikeouts out of winning pitcher Katie Buczynski. She allowed just 1 walk.

Offensively for Lake Zurich, Coryn Schmit had a big day. She went 3-for-3 with a double and a home run, her fourth of the year. She also drove in 3 runs.

For Wauconda, pitcher Kayla Stos had 7 strikeouts.

Libertyville 4, Round Lake 0: Katie Larson and Leanne Kaczmar each had 2 hits to lead the Wildcats to the win.

Pitcher Kat Bernard had 5 strikeouts for Libertyville.

Warren 3, Lakes 2: Pitcher Sam Berrios rolled up 9 strikeouts and gave up just 1 walk in leading Warren to victory.

Meanwhile, Julie Evans and Megan Carlyon each drove in runs in the top of the sixth to break up a 1-1 tie.

Teammate Sarah Clauser added 2 hits for the Blue Devils.

Carmel 2, Fenwick 1: On Senior Night, senior pitcher Courtney Ryan went the distance and gave up just 1 earned run to lead the Corsairs to victory.

Lake Forest 4, Vernon Hills 3: Despite 6 errors by Lake Forest, Vernon Hills wasn't able to pull out a win.

The Cougars had 5 hits, each by different players.

Adriana Longobardi drove in 2 runs for Vernon Hills, which drops to 26-5 on the season.

Soccer

Stevenson 3, Buffalo Grove 0: Stevenson was up 1-0 at halftime and just kept adding to its lead.

Tennis

Grant d. Johnsburg: Grant swept all three singles matches to get a 5-0 victory over Johnsburg.

Alex Marginean led the way for the Bulldogs with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Chris Goulet in No. 1 singles action.

Volleyball

Glenbrook N. d. Mundelein: Mundelein dropped to 10-23 with a 12-25, 13-25 loss.

John McElligott had a team-high 5 kills while Nick Faghihi and Patrick Lentz each had 2 blocks for the Mustangs.

Tim Tokarz led Mundelein with 7 digs and 7 assists.
