Wrap: Wydra flips a no-no at Larkin
Behind a Lauren Wydra no-hitter, Bartlett's softball team remained perfect in Upstate Eight Conference play Wednesday with a 4-0 win over Larkin.
Wydra (14-2) collected 12 strikeouts en route to the shutout, and helped herself at the dish going 1-for-2 with 2 RBI. Jillian Heidelmeier went 2-for-2 with a run to add to the offense for the Hawks (19-5, 15-0).
"(Sarah) McCleary threw an outstanding game for Larkin," said Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith. "We did just enough to get runs in and get the win."
Softball
Jacobs 3, Cary-Grove 1: Taking an early lead, Jacobs (19-2, 10-0) held on for the win to remain unbeaten in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action. Becky Wilson (9-2) was inside the circle allowing 1 earned run on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts. Plate efforts were led by Lauren Arceneaux (2-for-3, 2-run home run, 2 RBI) and Lizzie Andrews (2b, RBI).
Maggie O'Brien (2-for-3) scored the lone run for Cary-Grove (13-10, 5-5), and Lindsey Fritz went 2-for-3.
McHenry 4, Dundee-Crown 3: Despite a solid plate showing from Kathleen Collingbourne (HR, RBI), Dundee-Crown (3-12, 0-9) fell in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play. Emilie Kerkman endured the loss.
CL South 4, Woodstock 1: Emily Mahoney remained unbeaten taking the circle for Crystal Lake South (14-8, 6-5) in this Fox Valley Conference Valley Division meeting. Mahoney (6-0) went the distance allowing no earned runs on just 2 hits while fanning 8 batters. Offensively, Vicky Pyan (2-for-4, RBI) and Gina DeFano (hit, 2 RBI) led the Gator attack.
Burlington Central 4, Genoa-Kingston 0: Fanning 14 hitters, Mackenzie Scott allowed just 2 hits inside the circle for Burlington Central (22-1), which picked up consecutive win No. 14 with this nonconference victory. Brittany Priest brought home Erica Maisto (hit, run) with a triple in the second inning. Kayla Oranger (2-for-4, 2 runs, 3 sb) had a big offensive day for the Rockets.
Huntley 6, Grayslake North 3: Knotted at 3-3 after 7 innings, Alex Albanese became a 10th inning hero for Huntley (16-8, 9-2). With two down in the 10th inning, Albanese brought home 2 runs on a single to put the Red Raiders up 5-3. Sam Clemons followed with an RBI double extending the lead to 6-3. Clemons (2b, run, RBI) went on to shut down Grayslake for the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division win. She allowed 3 earned runs on 7 hits while striking out eight in the 10-inning performance.
Timely hitting from Albanese (4-for-6, 3 runs, 2 RBI), Jenna Mychko (3-for-6, RBI) and Deanna DeBosschere (3-for-6, 2 RBI) kept Huntley alive.
Prairie Ridge 10, CL Central 0: It was a big day inside the circle for Erika Trojan who no-hit Crystal Lake Central to lead the Wolves (13-8, 7-2) to this Fox Valley Conference Fox Division win. Trojan recorded six strikeouts and was just one walk away from a perfect game.
Offensively, Trojan was backed by Katie Schillinger (2b, run, 3 RBI), Kari Rankin (3-for-4, 2b, RBI, 2 runs) and Johanna Turner (2b).
Girls soccer
Burlington Central 3, Harvard 1: Taking a 1-0 lead into the second half with an unassisted goal from Michelle Fowler, Burlington Central (10-7-1, 5-1) never looked back in this Big Northern East Conference win. Kelly Engelking (Bri Conran assist) and Kalena Richards (Fowler) added insurance goals. In the net, Kim DeRaedt tallied 4 saves.
St. Charles North 9, Elgin 0: Kierstan Swartz and Christine Espindola kept busy sharing time in goal for Elgin (1-9-1, 1-9) as they dropped this Upstate Eight Conference meeting. Swartz had 18 saves in the first half alone, while Espindola collected 4 saves in the second half.
Hampshire 5, Marengo 1: With a pair of goals from both Devon Murphy and Alex Field, Hampshire (13-6-2, 4-3-1) earned this Big Northern East Conference win. Christine Schumacher capped off the scoring and also added an assist. Additional passes came from Kelsey Burke, Field and Kayla Meyer.
"The girls knew they needed to start scoring and they were hungry to do that tonight," said Hampshire coach Patrick O'Brien.
"I'm proud of how they kept at it, even after the weather turned sour. Devon had a nice senior night."
Jacobs 3, Prairie Ridge 1: With goals from Kelsey Quitschau, Markie Rahn and Jesica Perrone, Jacobs (8-13) came out on top of this Fox Valley Conference crossover match. Alyssa Barnard racked up 4 saves in goal for the Golden Eagles while Quitschau and K.C. Roller each added assists.
Tasha Pinkley had the lone goal for Prairie Ridge (9-7-2) assisted by Jackie Schwartz. In goal, Kyli Humm recorded 6 saves.
College baseball
St. Francis 11, Judson 5: Judson's 2008 campaign ended in the NAIA Region VII Tournament as the Eagles (18-25) fell to No. 1 ranked St. Francis, 11-5. The Eagles concluded one of their finest seasons ever claiming the CCAC Tournament championship and advancing to the NAIA Regional Tournament for the first time.
Angel Cisneros led Judson with a 3-of-3 performance and 2 RBI. Kyle Kobernus endured the loss. Judson pounded out 14 hits but left 10 runners on.
Judson (18-25) only loses three seniors in Scott Kainovic, Rafael Tejada, Jr., and Kobernus.
