Wrap: Sequoits rally for victory

A 4-run sixth inning by Antioch broke up a 1-1 tie as the Sequoits earned a 5-2 victory over Grant in North Suburban Prairie baseball action on Monday.

Ken Karagiorgas belted 3 hits, including a double and a triple, to lead the Sequoits (11-9, 9-1 North Suburban Prairie). Teammates Andy Danna, Jim Fracek and Austin Grimm each added 2 hits.

Fracek also got the win on the mound. He went 6½ innings and gave up just 2 walks.

Carmel 8, St. Joseph 0: Carmel pounded out 12 hits to get the East Suburban Catholic Conference win.

Jordan Sivertsen, Bobby Lyne, Joe Pudlo, David Venegoni and Scott Bierman all got 2 hits.

Sivertsen was also the winning pitcher.

Carmel moves to 17-2 overall and 8-2 in the ESCC.

Lake Zurich 11, Warren 4: The Bears were up 6-0 through three innings, thanks in part to a first-inning, 2-run home run by Joey DeBernardis.

It was his 10th dinger of the season.

Pitcher Brock Simon put in a solid five innings for the Bears. He scattered 2 hits and struck out seven batters. He also got himself out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth by striking out the side.

Corey Halicke added 2 hits for the Bears, who move to 19-5 overall and 8-2 in North Suburban Conference Lake Division play.

For Warren, Vince Campanella had 2 hits and Ryan Economos had a double.

Stevenson 5, Vernon Hills 1: Stevenson racked up 4 runs in the sixth inning en route to the North Suburban Conference crossover victory.

Brad Sorkin threw a complete game 2-hitter. He also tallied 5 strikeouts and gave up only 2 walks.

Wauconda gets sweep: Wauconda cruised by North Chicago 13-0, 20-0 to move to 15-8 overall and 7-3 in North Suburban Conference Prairie Division play.

Johnsburg 4, Grayslake N. 3: Johnsburg scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge the Knights.

Grayslake North (8-11, 4-5 in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division) got six hits, all from different players. Grant Henricksen led the way with a double.

Evanston 7, Lakes 6: It took 8 innings for Evanston to escape Lake Villa with a win.

Lakes had scored 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 6-6 and had a chance to win in the bottom of the seventh but left the bases loaded on a ground out to first.

Eric Lopez led the way for the Eagles with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate that included a double.

Andrew Highland, Dominic Costa and Justin Hotle added 2 hits for the Eagles, who move to 12-9 overall.

Softball

Grayslake N. 2, Crystal Lake Central 0: Grayslake North pitcher Carly Borders rolled up 10 strikeouts to get the win.

Offensively, Jamie Breitweiser went 2-for-3 for the Knights, who move to 8-13 overall.

Vernon Hills 10, Lakes 0: Vernon Hills rolled up 10 hits en route to the victory.

Megan Kubacki, Anna Christensen and Erin Christensen each had 2 hits for the Cougars.

Meanwhile, Heather Gray drove in 3 runs.

On the mound, pitcher Marci Pasquesi drove her record to 4-2 by striking out 4 batters and allowing no walks in a complete game.

Vernon Hills, moves to 22-3 overall and 10-0 in North Suburban Conference Prairie Division play.

Antioch 6, Grant 4: Samantha Seamon went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI to help Antioch move to 15-9 on the season (6-3 in North Suburban Conference Prairie Division play).

Stevenson 12, Glenbrook North 4: Stevenson rolled up 13 hits en route to the nonconference victory.

The Patriots (17-9) got a home run from Rebekah Ozga and doubles from Courtney Belcastro, Amanda Jaegers, Annelise Docel, Allison Micucci and Erica Castriano.

Micucci also got the win on the mound. She struck out 4 batters.

Huntley 11, Grayslake C. 0: Grayslake Central managed just 2 hits and committed 2 errors.

Soccer

Mundelein 3, Warren 0: After a scoreless first half, Mundelein went to work.

Ashley Begrowicz scored 2 goals for the Mustangs while Jenny Miranda scored the other.

Kim Carroll assisted on Begrowicz's first goal.

Goalie Nikki Allen had 4 saves for Mundelein, which moves to 11-2-3 overall and 3-1-2 in the North Suburban Lake Division.

Lake Zurich 1, Stevenson 0:

In the "Route 22 Cup," Lake Zurich got a second-half goal from Lauren Krzemniski to pull out the victory.

Kate Tarquino assisted on the goal.

Lake Zurich goalie Maggie Eisenhuth got her 10th shutout of the season by rolling up 10 saves.

The Bears move to 4-6-8 overall and 3-2-1 in the North Suburban Conference.

Wauconda 7, Round Lake 0:

Aimee Purdhomme and Jess Hellweg each scored 2 goals to lead Wauconda to the North Suburban Prairie Division victory.

Hellweg also had an assist.

Tammy Elllis, Hannah Voyta and Christina Durante scored the other goals for the Bulldogs, who jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead.

Libertyville 16, North Chicago 0: Libertyville goalie Erin Waehner got her seventh shutout of the season.

The Wildcats (10-2-1) got 3 goals from Jen Divincenzo and Caitlin Wagener and 2 goals from Michele McCracken, Sami Mack and Amanda Skul.

Christina McCracken, Haley Walton, Christina Sickert and Felicia Gonzalez each added a goal.

Hannah Walton had a team-high 5 assists for the Wildcats.

Grayslake N. 1, Woodstock 1: Sophomore midfielder Danielle Wohlfeil scored the first goal of her career to help the Knights earn the tie.

Elese Merkovsky got the assist.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Ashleigh Wonsil rolled up 5 saves for Grayslake North.

Volleyball

Carmel d. Mundelein: Carmel moved to 22-9 overall with a sweep of Mundelein, 25-19, 25-10.

Joe Sponseller rolled up a team-high 9 kills for the Corsairs while Zach Engels and Joe Ferrari added 8 kills apiece.

Engels also had 4 aces.

Josh Garwood had a team-high 5 blocks and setters Mike Geske and Mike Dietrich rolled up 17 and 11 assists, respectively.

For Mundelein (10-21), Jack Boich had a team-high 3 kills while Tyler Emde had 8 digs and setter Tim Tokarz tallied 9 assists.

Stevenson d. Glenbrook S.:ŒBrad Feiger rolled up 8 kills and Matt Ockrim added 6 to lead Stevenson to the nonconference victory, 25-22, 25-20.

Feiger also had 4 blocks and Ockrim had 2 aces.

Harrison Kay led the way with 17 digs and setter Jason Giecek finished with 18 assists for Stevenson, which moves to 18-13 overall.

Tennis

Grant d. Marian Catholic: Grant marched to a 5-0 sweep on the road.

Alex Marginean led the way with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mike Hettel in the No. 1 singles match.

Meanwhile, the team of Joe Loris and Josh White got a victory in the No. 1 singles match. And Clay Geunther won the No. 2 singles match.

Mundelein d. Zion-Benton: Led by sweeps in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, Mundelein rolled to a 4-1 victory.

Tyler Patner defeated Zion-Benton's Ian Sullivan 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match while Ben Nelson defeated DeShawn Coleman in the No. 2 match.

Mundelein's No. 2 doubles team of Chris Deri and Jorge Hernandez and the No. 3 doubles team of Masoom Patel and Eric Stadlman also got wins.

Barrington d. Warren: Barrington swept doubles play to get a 7-4 victory.

Warren's Igor Fedorov got a win in the No. 1 singles match, defeating Max Fetzer, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The Blue Devils also got victories in the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches, thanks to Konrad Siczek, Jon Donnowitz and Eric Teeman, respectively.
