Wrap: Grens, Broncos on hold

Elk Grove was an out away from losing Wednesday.

Chris D'Angelo didn't let it happen.

Barrington was a hit away from losing the Mid-Suburban League baseball crossover.

Tim Conroy didn't let it happen.

As a result, well, that's on hold after their game was suspended in a 4-4 tie after 10 innings because of darkness. They'll resume play in the 11th at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Elk Grove.

And both teams have been here before in the last week. Elk Grove beat Palatine in an 11-inning suspended game Tuesday and Barrington lost to Rolling Meadows in a 10-inning suspended game last Thursday.

"I think we'll be ready to go," Conroy said after throwing 3 hitless innings and leaving runners at first and second in the 10th. "There's no doubt in my mind we'll come out ready to go and ready to hit the ball."

The Broncos (10-8, 5-3) got a solo homer from Jack Golek and 3 runs in the fourth on 4 walks and an error to take a 4-1 lead. Conroy and replacement Bryan Grabowski combined for three shortstop-to-first double plays and second baseman Mark Minner turned a hit-and-run liner into a double play.

But Barrington had only 4 hits and couldn't take advantage of 10 walks as 8 of their 11 runners left on base were in scoring position.

"We needed that big hit and didn't do it," said Barrington coach Jim Hawrysko. "We lived in the air and that's not a good thing for us."

Neither was the arrival of Elk Grove (11-9, 5-3) righty Josh Daniels, who ended up throwing the equivalent of a 116-pitch complete game in relief. Daniels pitched around 6 walks, gave up only 2 singles and retired the last 8 hitters he faced.

"Josh pitched a heck of a game," D'Angelo said.

"I've been throwing on consecutive days," said Daniels, who got the win over Palatine in relief. "You don't expect to throw 100-some pitches but I'm glad I was able to keep us in the game.

"I have a lot of trust in these guys because they've been hitting the ball well. Especially 'D-Lo.'"

Barrington sophomore Sean Buchholz gave up an RBI double to Kevin Miller in the first and a solo homer to Matt Martinski in the fourth.

A single by Tony Logli (3-for-4) to leadoff the seventh and a two-out single by pinch hitter Bryant Weber set up D'Angelo's tying triple to left-center off Buchholz.

"This team's got a lot of heart," said D'Angelo, who was 3-for-5. "I felt the same way I always do coming up to bat. I've been in this position before."

He hopes to get another chance at it again Tuesday.

Meadows 13, Hoffman 3: Ben Sabal went 3-for-3 with a grand slam and 5 RBI and winning pitcher Ted Metzger (3-0) was 3-for-3 as Meadows (11-4, 7-2) won its ninth straight in 5 innings and moved into sole possession of first place in the East.

Dan Lauria (2 RBI) and Kyle Gaedele went 2-for-3. Dave Ehlers and Darryl Howell had 2 hits for Hoffman (7-8, 3-6).

Schaumburg 7, BG 3: Lefty Andy Brandt (5-1) threw a complete-game 7-hitter with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks for Schaumburg (13-4, 7-2) in the MSL crossover.

Dan Launhardt hit a 2-run homer and had a sacrifice fly and Alec Fontanez was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Saxons. Zach Borenstein and Steve Pollokov went 2-for-3 for BG (7-8, 3-6).

Fremd 11, Prospect 3: Jason Ford (3-1) pitched 6 innings, hit his seventh homer and doubled and had 4 RBI as Fremd (10-4, 5-3) won its fourth straight in the MSL crossover.

Shortstop Ryan Shober and Nick Addison went 3-for-4 for Fremd. Shane Uhle was 2-for-3 for Prospect (10-9, 6-3).

Fremd also ended the game with a triple play. With runners on first and second, first baseman Mike Tauchman caught a liner, stepped on the bag and threw to Shober for the last out.

Hersey 7, Conant 3: Chris James worked through early trouble to earn a complete-game victory as the host Huskies took advantage of a couple of big hits late in the game by Matt Frenzer.

Hersey (10-11, 2-6) gave up 3 runs, 2 of them unearned, in the first inning. But James allowed 7 hits and blanked Conant (6-9, 3-6) over the final 6 innings.

Frenzer delivered a two-out, 2-run single as part of a 3-run fifth and also had an RBI single in a 2-run sixth.

Bobby Gehm went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI for Hersey.

Wheeling 3, Palatine 2: The Wildcats (3-9, 3-5) scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth of the MSL crossover to make a complete-game winner of Steve Slussar (3-2), who struck out seven and walked one.

In the sixth, Justin Christell led off with a hit by pitch, took second on a sacrifice bunt from Case Jackson and scored on a single to left field by Steve Yfantis.

Palatine (4-15, 3-6) had 7 hits, including 2 doubles from Cody Bobbitt.

Leyden 5, Hinsdale C. 2: Leyden (16-2) extended its winning streak to 10 games in the suspended West Suburban Conference crossover.

Joe Natale's RBI single broke the tie. Josh Serrano was the winner and Jonathan Weaver got the save.
