Wrap: Guletsky's hit wins it for VH

Vernon Hills' softball team wasn't fazed.

Antioch scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday to take the lead in the softball teams' North Suburban Conference Prairie Division showdown.

But the Cougars scored twice in their half of the frame to pull out a 6-5 win.

Anastasia Guletsky won the game for Vernon Hills with an RBI single.

Alyssa Dougherty went 3-for-4 to pace an 11-hit attack, as the Cougars improved to 13-3 overall and 4-0 in the NSC Prairie.

Guletsky (2 RBI), Erin Christensen (double) and Marci Pasquesi (double, RBI) each had 2 hits for Vernon Hills.

Jackie Allen allowed 4 earned runs over 7 innings to earn the win.

Lindsay Callanan went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Antioch (9-5), while Ashley Mysliwiec suffered the loss.

The Sequoits' seventh-inning rally started with two out, as Jamie Villalobos and Callanan singled. They stole second and third base, respectively, and scored on Anne Bruce's single. Melisa Ori then hit an RBI single to put Antioch in front.

The teams rematch Thursday at Antioch.

Lakes 2, Round Lake 1: The Eagles scored in the top of the seventh on Nora Kenney's RBI single to snap a 1-1 tie in the North Suburban Prairie Division game.

Callie Bretthauer had walked with two out and stolen second base. She then scored on Kenney's hit.

Lakes pitcher Shannon Cooley struck out 12 and walked two, and she also had a single. Kenney finished 2-for-4.

Lakes improved to 8-8 overall and 4-1 in the NSC Prairie.

Pitcher Debbie Russ tripled for Round Lake, and Brittany Baum drove in the Panthers' lone run. Jamie White kept the game close with her great grabs in center field, coach Kristin Vogt said.

Carmel 3, Waukegan 1: Kelly Gerli belted her fourth home run of the season, singled and knocked in a pair of runs in the nonconference game.

Katie Cornell was 2-for-2 with a triple and sacrifice, and Rachel Tack pitched a complete-game 5-hitter with 4 strikeouts. Michelle Winegard added a single and run scored for Carmel (6-7).

Stephanie Rodriguez (2-for-3) homered for Waukegan's run.

Lake Zurich 8, Libertyville 0: Katie Buczynski fired a 1-hitter with 9 strikeouts and no walks, as the Bears remained undefeated in North Suburban Lake Division play.

Lake Zurich (12-2, 6-0) pounded out 18 hits, including 3 apiece from Coryn Schmit (triple, RBI), Jessi Borre, Stephanie Hoff and Erin Sweeney (RBI). Ella Aslan, Buczynski and Chrissie Wichmann (2-for-4, RBI) each had a double.

Johnsburg 3, Grayslake N. 2: The visiting Skyhawks scored once in the seventh to tie the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division game, then once in the eighth to win it.

Grayslake North (5-7, 1-3) stranded runners on first and second in the bottom of the eighth. Amanda Leon had a double for the Knights.

Stevenson 4, Warren 3: Rebekah Ozga singled home Annelise Docel, who had tripled with one out, with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Stevenson (10-5, 2-2) took a 3-0 lead into the top of seventh, but Warren (11-8, 4-2) got a leadoff double from Kayla Hurd. After Julie Evans' sacrifice bunt, Alex Booker reached on a single.

Jenna Anderson then hit a 2-run single and eventually scored on Sarah Clauser's RBI base hit.

The Blue Devils got 2 hits apiece from Booker, Anderson and Clauser.

Allison Micucci earned the win in relief of birthday-girl Jordan Willis. Docel finished 3-for-4 for Stevenson, which has a makeup game today at home against Zion-Benton.

Prairie Ridge 11, Grayslake C. 5: Kelly Silver had a triple for the Rams, while Abbie Goetsch, Monika Wedick and Tory Dohm each doubled.

Baseball

Mundelein 11, Lake Forest 8: Justin Piasecki, Brad Medina and Jay Mueller homered for the host Mustangs in North Suburban Lake Division action.

Medina also doubled, as did Dillon Smith for Mundelein (15-2, 4-1). Besides Medina, Colton Tortorello, Alex Ahonen and Muller each had 2 hits.

Piasecki earned the win, striking out eight and walking one in 6 innings.

Grayslake N. 8, CL Central 2: Jordan Field was 3-for-3 for the visiting Knights, who had 13 hits in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division game.

Grayslake North (5-6, 1-2) also received 2 hits apiece from Nick Harrington, Tim Elias and Clay Henricksen (2 RBI). Henricksen, Jim Butler and Field all had doubles.

Winning pitcher Nate Sousa allowed 2 runs (1 earned) in 6 innings.

Round Lake 6, Lakes 3: The Panthers erased a 3-0 deficit, as winning pitcher David Ershbock doubled twice.

Chris Rodriguez also had a pair of hits for Round Lake (2-8, 1-2). Ershbock struck out 11 and yielded 6 hits in a complete-game effort.

Lakes fell to 7-7 overall.

Warren 5, Stevenson 4: Vince Viverito homered and drove in two runs for the host Blue Devils, who won the North Suburban Lake Division game by scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Ryan Economos was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI for Warren.

Matt Goll hit a home run for Stevenson (9-7).

Antioch 2, Vernon Hills 0: Jim Fracek pitched a 4-hitter for the host Sequoits in North Suburban Prairie Division action.

Fracek (2-1), who struck out five and walked a pair, got offensive support from Logan Kent (3-for-3, 2 runs) and Ken Karagiorgas (1-for-3, RBI), as Antioch improved to 6-5.

Zack Schwartz suffered the tough-luck loss for Vernon Hills, allowing only 1 earned run in 6 innings.

Girls soccer

Lakes 9, N. Chicago 0: Alex Neal scored twice and Ashley Neubeck had a goal and 2 assists for the Eagles in the North Suburban Prairie Division match.

Lakes (7-6, 3-0) also got goals from Brittany Mooney, Ashley Chernich, Jessie David, Michelle Kosmen, Jen Heubner and Sophia Khawaja. Kristina Umlauf had 3 assists.

Sarah Fitzpatrick made 4 saves to earn her third shutout.

Wauconda 4, McHenry 0: Jaclyn Schumann had a goal and 3 assists for the visiting Bulldogs in the nonconference game.

Hannah Voyta, Jess Hellweg and Allison Durkin also scored for Wauconda (9-2-2). Hellweg had an assist, as well, while Becky Breakfield earned the shutout in goal.

Boys volleyball

Carmel d. St. Viator: Joe Sponseller slammed 13 kills, as the Corsairs won 25-18, 25-19 to improve to 15-6 overall and 3-0 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.

Zach Engels and Josh Garwood added 6 and 4 kills, respectively, while Joe Ferrari -had 3 solo blocks. Mike Geske lofted 17 assists, and Mike Dietrich chipped in seven.

Boys tennis

Libertyville 3, Lake Zurich 2: The Wildcats swept singles with Erik Scanlan (No. 1) and Anish Raman (No. 2) and also captured first doubles with Tyler Chaitoff/Dean Leventis, who prevailed in three sets.

Lake Zurich's wins came from Mark Decanio/Pat Flanagan (No. 2 doubles) and Luke Mueller/Pierce Romei (No. 3 doubles)

Boys lacrosse

Grayslake C. 7, Lake Zurich 6: The Rams received 2 goals apiece from Charlie Dever and Caleb Noble.

Scott and Matt Eschenbaum also scored for Grayslake Central.
