General Assembly Scholarship: State Rep. Tim Schmitz (R-Batavia) recently announced that General Assembly Scholarship applications are available for the 2008-09 school year.

This program allows each of the state's legislators to award scholarships that provide tuition waivers to students who reside within their legislative districts. A total of eight one-year scholarships will be awarded to students who have been accepted to or who currently attend a state-supported university, including the University of Illinois.

Schmitz has appointed an independent General Assembly Scholarship Advisory Committee to review the applications and select the eight recipients of the scholarships. The committee consists of both current and former educators and school administrators.

Both graduate and undergraduate students who reside in the 49th District are urged to apply. Further qualifications for the scholarships include the acceptance to one of the eligible universities as a full-time student, evidence of involvement in public and civic affairs, good academic standing, and relative financial need.

Students must fully complete the requirements of the scholarship application, furnish official transcripts from all schools attended, and provide three letters of recommendation.

The application deadline is 3 p.m. Friday. Postmarked dates will not be used to determine whether an application is on time.

CG Chamber Business Scholarships: The Cary Grove Area Chamber of Commerce is currently accepting applications for its 2008 Business Scholarship Awards.

Each year the chamber provides more than $2,000 in scholarship funds to local high school students living in the 60013 or 60021 ZIP code area, who plan to pursue business related fields in college and bring their expertise back into the Cary Grove community.

Applications are available through the chamber office at 27 E. Main St., on Route 14 in the Swanson Painting building. The application deadline is Monday.

Recipients for the scholarships are chosen by the chamber's Scholarship Committee which consists of local business members. Over the years the chamber has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship monies to area students.

The Cary Grove Chamber Business Scholarship fund is supported through donations from local business including True Value Manufacturing, and other Chamber members. The fund also receives proceeds from various chamber events such as the Chamber Garden Walk, scheduled this year for June 21, the Cruisin' Cary nights throughout the summer, and other activities.

Fox River Grove Lioness: Fox River Grove Lioness The Fox River Grove Lioness organization is taking applications for a scholarship. This is the second year the Lionesses are presenting a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

High school seniors who attend Cary-Grove High School or seniors who live in Fox River Grove and attend other high schools or programs are encouraged to apply.

Applications are available at the Fox River Grove Village Hall or at the Fox River Grove Memorial Library. The application deadline is April 25. For information, call Vivian Glenz at (847) 639-0932.

Auxiliary of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital: The Auxiliary of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital is once again offering scholarships for students residing in the hospital service area who will attend school in Illinois and pursue an education in a health-related field.

The service area includes these ZIP codes: 60010, 60012, 60013, 60014, 60021, 60042, 60047, 60050, 60051, 60060, 60067, 60073, 60074, 60084, 60098, 60102, 60110, 60118, 60156, 60192, 60194 and 60195.

The number of scholarships to be awarded will be based on the numbers and qualifications of applicants. Current references, transcripts, and proof of acceptance from the institution and acceptance into a health care professional program are required. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of attitude and desire toward education, leadership, citizenship, personality and financial need.

Applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered and filed with the Auxiliary Scholarship Committee no later than April 30.

American Institute of Architects: AIA Northeast Illinois, in conjunction with The American Institute of Architects, is offering three scholarships of $3,000 each.

Applications, including two letters of recommendation, must be postmarked by May 1.

Those applying must be United States citizens and be enrolled for fall 2008 in one of the 27 accredited architecture programs within the National Architectural Accrediting Board's East Central or West Central regions.

Scholarships are available to current architectural students, community college transfer students and high school seniors.

Applicants must have a home residence of record within the chapter's boundaries of Cook, DuPage, Kane and Kendall counties, except within Chicago's city limits and areas south of Interstate 55 or east of the Edens Expressway. Past recipients are ineligible.

Instructions and applications are available on the AIA/NEI Web site, www.aianei.org. Applicants also may request a form by mail from the chapter office, AIA Northeast Illinois, 412 Green Valley Drive, Naperville, IL 60540. The request should include the student's name, current mailing address, school and current year in school.

Qualifying architectural schools are: University of Illinois at both Chicago and Urbana-Champaign, Illinois Institute of Technology, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Judson University, Andrews University, Ball State University, Drury University and Iowa State University.

Also: Kansas State University, Kent State University, Lawrence Technological University, Miami University (Ohio), North Dakota State University, Ohio State University, Oklahoma State University, University of Cincinnati and University of Detroit Mercy.

Hampshire VFW Post 8043: Hampshire Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8043 and Ladies Auxiliary scholarship applications were delivered to Hampshire and Burlington Central high schools on April 1. The deadline date for completion will be April 30. Completed applications will be picked up at the schools on May 1.

The Post will be awarding one scholarship at Hampshire High School and one at Burlington Central High School. The requirements for the VFW Post scholarship are: ranking in class; extracurricular activities; involvement with church and community; institution planning on attending; course of study; and having a relative currently serving or had served in the U.S. armed forces (a mother, father, brother, sister or grandparent).

Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary Post 8043 requirements are: major field of study; financial need; extracurricular activities; scholastic standing; and community service involvement. The Ladies Auxiliary will be awarding one scholarship at Hampshire High School and one at Burlington Central High School. Presentation of Post and Auxiliary scholarships will be at the Awards Night.

General Assembly Scholarship: State Rep. Jack Franks (D-Woodstock) announced eight, one-year, full tuition General Assembly Scholarships to be awarded to current high school seniors. The scholarships will waive 12 months of full tuition for those students to be enrolled in a degree granting program at Illinois public universities in the fall.

Under general guidelines set by Franks, specific criteria is determined and administered by the guidance departments of eight McHenry County high schools. Applications must be obtained and submitted to the respective high school where each graduating senior currently attends. Schools must return applications by May 1.

To qualify, a student must live in the current 63rd Legislative District. Rep. Franks plans to present the General Assembly Scholarship at each high school awards assembly or graduation this spring. For information, call Franks' office at (815) 334-0063.

Agriculture Scholarship Program: Kane County Treasurer David J. Rickert recently announced that applications for state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias' Agriculture Scholarship Program are available through the Kane County Treasurer's Office.

Ten $2,500 scholarships are awarded annually to Illinois high school seniors who plan to pursue a college degree and career in agriculture or an agriculture-related field. Scholarship recipients are selected by a panel of Illinois agriculture agency representatives.

Scholarship funds are restricted to the payment of tuition, books and/or room and board at the educational institution. Applicants must be a high school senior with 2.75 grade-point average in 2007-08, a resident of Illinois, accepted at an accredited higher educational institution in Illinois and pursuing an agriculture or agriculture-related major.

An application must be postmarked on or before May 15 and must be submitted with an essay identifying the reason(s) you want to pursue a career in agriculture or an agriculture-related field; an official high school transcript; two letters of reference, including one from a non-school source; a list of extracurricular activities; and a statement of goals and future plans.

"This is an excellent opportunity to offset some of the costs associated with pursuing an agriculture degree," Rickert stated.

Art for All: Art for All has a $500 art scholarship available for the 2008-09 academic year.

The application deadline is June 1. The requirements include: planning to complete 30 semester hours toward an art-related degree; attending a college within 50 miles of Elgin; and living in the greater Elgin/Fox Valley area.

Art For All invites all artists and non-artists to its meeting at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 340 Grand Blvd. in Elgin, across from Lords Park.

This is a chance to network with area artists. Art for All has year-round artist exhibits at five locations: Elgin city hall, The Centre of Elgin, Sherman Hospital, Carswell's Flooring, and Trefon's Restaurant.
