Leganski belts 2 more HRs
Larkin graduate Deb Leganski hit her 19th and 11th home runs of the season Monday to power Judson University's softball team to a 9-1 win over Purdue-North Central in the first game of a CCAC doubleheader at the Elgin Sports Complex.
Judson (18-15, 9-6) then completed the sweep with a 5-3 win in the nightcap.
Judson had 18 hits and 4 home runs on the day. Burlington Central alum Carrie Sensor was 4-for-7 for the Eagles while Nicole Dimiceli and Lizzy Jacobson also homered.
Jacobson was the Game 1 winner and Aimee Ewert picked up the victory in Game 2.
Girls soccer
Elgin Academy 1, Aurora Central Catholic 0: The Hilltoppers (3-2) earned a nonconference road win when Allison Clarke scored a second-half goal, assisted by Kristen Cella. Bianca Swegler posted the shutout in net with 13 saves.
IMSA 3, Streamwood 2: Pearl Patel made 6 saves but the host Titans won this nonconference meeting in Aurora. Sara Kemps scored for Streamwood (4-5-3), assisted by Alanah Thompson, and Valentina Escalante scored Streamwood's second goal from a Geena Boris helper.
Burlington Central 1, South Elgin 0: Bri Conran, assisted by Michelle Folwer, notched a second-half goal to lead the Rockets to a nonconference victory against the Storm. Kime DeRaedt made 7 saves for Central (3-6-0).
St. Francis 5, Westminster Christian 0: Brittany Feitlich made 12 saves but the Warriors (0-6) were overrun by the Spartans in Wheaton.
Baseball
Prairie Ridge 13, Dundee-Crown 6: The Wolves (6-3) used 7 doubles to beat the visiting Chargers (4-3) and snap a three-game losing skid. Bobby Martin, David Mitroff and Mike Butler each doubled twice and Steve Drain added another.
Swank gave up 5 runs, all unearned. He struck out six, walked two and limited D-C to 4 hits in a nonconference game.
Ben Rodriguez (2-1) endured his first loss of the season for D-C.
Huntley 5, Cary-Grove 0: Tanner Funke improved to 4-1 on the season with a complete-game 4-hitter. Funke sent the hot-hitting Trojans (9-2) to their second straight defeat by limiting them to 1 earned run on 4 hits with no walks and 6 strikeouts. At the plate, Funke and Zach Liebman each went 2-for-3 with a double for the Red Raiders (8-4). Eric Aguilera went 2-for-2 for Cary-Grove.
Jacobs 12, Grayslake Central 0: The Golden Eagles scored 8 runs in the fifth to take care of the host Rams in five innings. Mike Castillo homered, Matt Igara doubled, Johnny Amann tripled and Brandon Stroh went 2-for-3 for Jacobs (4-1). Ryan Lesner (2-0) limited Grayslake Central to 3 hits in 5 innings, struck out 10 and walked a pair.
Crystal Lake South 4, Grayslake North 2: James Vazquez went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and 2 runs scored and pitcher Ian Gardeck improved to 3-0 as the Gators (5-1) won a nonconference affair in Grayslake.
St. Charles East 5, Larkin 0: The Royals were blanked by the Saints in an Upstate Eight Conference game in St. Charles. John Banks (1-1) took the first loss of his varsity career in 7 decisions despite going 2-for-3 at the plate for Larkin (4-5, 3-3).
Elgin 3, East Aurora 0: Junior Tom Roth was the star of the game for the Maroons in an Upstate Eight game against the visiting Tomcats. Elgin (2-3, 2-3) won its second straight, powered by a home run from Roth, who also pitched a complete-game, 4-hit shutout with 15 strikeouts and 2 walks. "Tom pitched a great game with a solid defense behind him," Elgin coach David Foerster said.
Marian Central 1, St. Edward 0: Matt Huck outdueled the Green Wave's Jim Fraczek, who pitched 6 innings of 6-hit ball with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks. Kyle Tourtellot went 1-for-3 with a double for St. Edward, which dropped to 3-5, 2-2 in the Suburban Catholic.
Boys volleyball
St. Edward d. Elgin: It took a pair of close games from the Green Wave to complete a 25-23, 25-22 sweep in nonconference play. Lucas Belcher and Will Lytle each finished with 8 kills and 4 aces, Miguel Martinez recorded 15 assists and Jack Cholewa dug 10 balls for the Green Wave (4-3).
Softball
Jacobs 10, Crystal Lake Central 0: The Golden Eagles improved to 5-1 this season with a 10-0 nonconference victory against the Tigers in Algonquin. Becky Wilson (3-1) earned the win in the circle by limiting CL Central to 2 hits and she helped her own cause by going 4-for-4 at the plate with a double. Lauren Arceneaux went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored for Jacobs.
Crystal Lake South 15, Huntley 5: Gina DeFano finished 3-for-4 with 4 RBI, Megan Hardie went 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI and Vicky Pyan had 2 hits, including a double, to lead the Gators (4-2) in nonconfernce play. Jessica Gable picked up the victory after holding the Red Raiders to 5 hits in 5 innings with 7 strikeouts and 3 walks.
Hampshire 4, Stillman Valley 2: Tegan Singleton improved to 4-0 this season. She struck out eight without a walk to lead the Whip-Purs (7-2).
Elgin 11, East Aurora 1: Elgin (1-6, 1-2 Upstate Eight) cracked the win column for the first time this season. Devin Hayes doubled twice and Alyssa Higdon (1-3) earned the victory on the strength of 7 strikeouts.
Cary-Grove 2, Johnsburg 0: The Trojans shutout the visiting Skyhawks behind 7 innings of 2-hit ball from senior pitcher Kristen Bauer. Freshman Alexis Haley tripled and senior Lindsay Fritz went 2-for-3, drove in a run and scored once for Cary-Grove (7-2).
Marian Central 5, St. Edward 0: Freshman Lea Diaz went 2-for-3 and Megan Pozezinski and Erin McGraw each went 1-for-2 in a losing cause in a Suburban Catholic Conference game in Elgin. McGraw (0-3) took the loss in 4 innings of work.
Lake Park 11, South Elgin 6: The Storm fell in an Upstate Eight meeting despite a 3-for-4 performance from senior shortstop Stephanie Sanocki. Kimberly Pierce and Lauren Vitiello each went 2-for-3 for South Elgin.
Grayslake North 11, Dundee-Crown 1: Senior Kayla Schumacher allowed just 4 hits and walked 1 but the Chargers (2-4) were sunk by 6 errors in the field against the Rams in Carpentersville.
College baseball
Judson splits: Kyle Kobernus tossed a complete-game game shutout in the first game of a doubleheader to beat Purdue North-Central, the No. 6-ranked team in NAIA Region VII. ECC 9, Waubonsee 7: Josh Ehlers hit a 2-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Spartans (11-5, 5-0) to a dramatic victory in the Skyway Collegiate Conference. Matt Wietlispach and Trevor Rutkowski each doubled for Elgin. Bobby Diebold (1-3) earned his first victory of the season.
