Softball roundup
Several Mid-Suburban League softball teams went through their final tuneups Saturday for conference play which begins Monday.
Elk Grove sweeps Niles West: Elk Grove (7-1) won the opener 9-1 behind Stephanie Maday's 2-hitter, including 8 strikeouts and 3 walks.
Stephanie Dolce (3-for-4, 3 RBI), Amanda Mertes (2-for-4), Jessica Balzano (2-for-4), Caitlin Garrison (2-for-2) and Brittany Tranchita (2-for-4) led the Grens' offense.
Garrison injured her knee sliding into third base in the third inning and was out of action the rest of the day.
Shortstop Olivia Roback did not play Saturday because of an elbow injury.
Jamie Campus took her place at short, and Balzano took over for Garrison at second base.
In Game 2, Krystina Leazer (2-1) struck out 13 with 1 walk as the Grens won 8-2.
Nikki Goranson belted a 3-run homer in the second inning. Campus (2-for-3, RBI) and Kayla Mahoney (2-for-4, RBI) also led the offense.
Fremd sweeps Mundelein: Fremd sophomore Lena Brottman struck out the first nine batters and finished with 12 strikeouts in a five-inning 10-0 shutout in Game 1.
Sophomore Alexa Cinquegrani (3-for-3) had 2 triples, while Tess Dintermann (2-for-2) had a double. Kelly Voigt also doubled for the Vikings (3-0), while teammate Jenny Schneider was 2-for-2.
Junior Casey Latal (1-0) was the winning pitcher in Game 2 as the Vikings won 10-2. She struck out nine and walked none while tossing a 3-hitter.
Cinquegrani went 2-for-4 with a double. Brittany Borst also doubled for host Fremd.
Prospect sweeps Downers Grove North:Œ Prospect senior Sheri Weidner stopped the host Trojans twice -- 6-1 and 1-0.
Amanda Mlikan (2-for-4, Mary Kate Ward (3-for-4, double) and Paige O'Neil (3-for-4, double) led the Knights (3-2) in Game 1.
Weidner (3-2) struck out six and walked none.
Getting her first varsity start, freshman left fielder Nikki Surico collected the game-winning hit in Game 2.
Surico's two-out double to right-center with two outs in the fifth brought home O'Neil, who had also doubled with two outs.
Weidner struck out five and walked two while throwing to catcher Cyndi Becker, who went 2-for-3.
Barrington quad: The host Fillies (7-1) defeated New Trier 4-3 and Round Lake 21-0 in five innings.
Kim Cygan (3-for-4) threw a 5-hitter with 2 strikeouts against New Trier and her two-out single to right-center brought home Devinne Wapotish (doubled) with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Cygan (7-1) struck out three in 3 innings against Round Lake, while Allison Martin went the final 2 innings with 2 strikeouts.
Michal Jane Maropis (3-for-3, double) led the Fillies, while Wapotish was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and 5 runs.
Lisa Shandley, Cygan (4 RBI), Martin (2 RBI), Katie Coffman (2 RBI, double) and Jessica McGurn (2 RBI) all had 2 hits.
Schaumburg improved to 4-0 by defeating New Trier 7-3 and Round Lake.
Woodstock tourney: Conant took second place in the tourney with a 2-1 record.
The Cougars (2-2) defeated Rockford Jefferson 11-0 Œbehind junior Rachel Groenwald's 2-hitter and 5 strikeouts.
Hilary O'Donnell (double), Lauren Erkman (triple, double) and Vicki McGuire each had 2 hits for Conant. Paige Ward added a triple.
In Game 2, Conant lost 1-0 to Crystal Lake South. Junior Julie Hartsfeld went all 9 innings for the Cougars, striking out six and walking none.
"Julie did a great job on the mound," said Conant coach CathyAnn Smith.
The Cougars defeated Harvard 8-2 in Game 3 as freshman Kailee Pasbrig threw a 4-hitter with 7 strikeouts.
Ward (double) had 2 hits while Erkman had a home run and double.
Christina Shelfo also doubled for the Cougars.
"Kailee pitched a great game to Jess Gennuso who caught all three games," Smith said.
Buffalo Grove, Vernon Hills split: The host Bison (2-3) posted a 3-0 win in Game 2 behind freshman Andrea DiPrima, who threw a 1-hitter and was 2-for-3 with a double. Teammate Katie Kowall also doubled.
Vernon Hills won the opener 8-3.
DiPrima (3-for-3) had a double, while freshman Maria Dax suffered the loss.
Palatine splits: Palatine stopped Belvidere 14-0 in five innings behind senior Steph Roto's no-hitter.
Nikki Linares went 3-for-3 for the Pirates, while Amy Modic had a double and triple.
Jacobs shut out the Pirates 10-0 in Game 2. Stephanie Roto doubled for the Pirates (1-2).
Dundee Crown 7, Wheeling 3: Carly Speidel (2-for-3) and Scout Scanlon (2-for-3, 3 stolen bases, 1 run) led the Wildcats in their season opener.
Speidel struck out 10 batters in 4 innings of relief.
Sophomore Tori Menelle started for the Wildcats.
