D-C earns win over Prospect
Getting some fourth inning heroics from Brendan Schumacher (run, 2 RBI), who hit a 2-run home-run to put Dundee-Crown on top 3-0, the Chargers (1-1) earned a 3-1 nonconference baseball win over Prospect Wednesday.
Ryan Horcher (hit, run), Logan Kissack (2b) and Dan Kilchenman (2b, run) contributed with key plate efforts for D-C.
Ben Rodriguez was on the mound for the win going the distance, and allowing just one run on 5 hits while striking out four.
Baseball
Wheaton Warrenville South 4, Streamwood 2: Despite a solid outing from Rob Barth, who gave up just 1-hit while striking out three, Streamwood (0-2) dropped this nonconference contest. At the plate, Matthew Korntved (2b), Matt Cohen (RBI), Brian Domokos (hit) and Jason Overton (hit, RBI) led the way.
Huntley 6, Marengo 0: Nate Prokuski was the man of the hour for Huntley (4-1) leading it to this nonconference win behind a complete-game 1-hitter. Prokuski fanned five batters and helped himself at the dish with a double.
Offensively, Craig Lipp (2-for-3, run, 2 RBI), Chris Klein (2-for-3, run, RBI), Eliot Swiatly (hit, run) and Jimmy Gordon (hit, run) provided more than enough hitting to back the 1-hit performance from Prokuski, who improves to 3-0 on the season.
Cary-Grove 3, Stevenson 0: Despite being out-hit 5-2, Cary-Grove (6-0) got this nonconference win behind timely efforts. Eric Aguilera (2b, RBI) and Kyle Williams (hit, 2 stolen bases) led the offense. On the mound, Tyler Herman recorded the shutout allowing 4 hits in six innings of work while fanning six.
Prairie Ridge 7, Rolling Meadows 4: A bases-loaded, base clearing double off the bat of Nolan Jacoby was the difference for Prairie Ridge (5-0) in this nonconference win. The game-winning hit came in the bottom of the fifth to put the Wolves on top for good. Contributing at the plate were Mike Butler (2b) and Bobby Martin (2b).
Ross Vance (1-0) earned the win, and Mike Heesch recorded the save.
Winnebago 11, Hampshire 9: Despite a 2-run double off the bat of James Goebbert bringing Hampshire (0-2) into extra innings, the Whips fell to Winnebago in nonconference play after 8 innings.
Ryan Burke got the loss giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits in 2½ innings of work. Zach Crinigan (2b) and Joel Moore (2 run home run) led the Whip-Pur hitting.
Burlington Central 22, Byron 1: Pounding out 17 hits and 22 runs, Burlington Central (2-2) earned this nonconference win in five innings. Bats were in full swing for Bryan Bell (3-for-5, RBI), Austin Jarvis (2-for-2, 3 runs, RBI), Drew Perly (3-for-3, 2 runs, 2b) George Heller (HR, 2 RBI) and Mark Gorney (3-for-4, 3 RBI).
Heller was on the mound for the win allowing a run on 3 hits with 7 strikeouts in 4 innings of work.
Softball
Lake Park 8, Streamwood 1: Carrying a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning, Streamwood (0-4, 0-2) fell behind and couldn't bounce back in this Upstate Eight Conference loss. Barb Posinger was inside the circle allowing 8 runs on 11 hits while fanning 10 batters. Plate efforts for Streamwood were led by Melissa Abraham who knocked in the lone run of the game. Helene Eckler had a hit and a run scored.
Huntley 8, Hononegah 1: A combination of solid pitching and a powerful offense earned Huntley (1-0) this big nonconference season-opening victory. Samantha Clemons was inside the circle allowing just 1 earned run on 4 hits while striking out three.
Pounding out 14 hits, the Red Raider offense was led by Jenna Mychko (3-for-4, run, 2 RBI), Amanda Wisniewski (2-for-3, 3b, run, RBI), Deanna DeBosschere (2b, 2 RBI), Sarah Clancy (2-for-4, run, RBI) and Alex Albanese (2-for-4, 2 runs).
Buffalo Grove 6, Cary-Grove 4: Trailing 6-2 after four innings, Cary-Grove (1-1) battled back, but didn't quite get enough falling to Buffalo Grove in nonconference action. Meredith Riemann endured the loss pitching 4½ innings allowing 6 runs.
Leading plate efforts for the Trojans were Maggie O'Brien (2-for-3) and Lindsay Fritz (3-for-4).
Hampshire 9, Winnebago 6: An overall solid showing from Hampshire (1-1) led to this nonconference win over Winnebago. Ally Kent pitched a complete game for the victory striking out nine.
A big day at the dish from Jessica Kraus led the way. Kraus went 4-for-4 with 2 doubles, 2 triples and 5 RBI. Kelsey Watson (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and Carly Niles (2 hits) contributed.
Larkin 12, East Aurora 2: Racking up 17 hits behind leaders Ellis Hatchett (3-for-4, 2 runs, RBI), Corinne Wimmer (2-for-4), Sarah McCleary (2-for-3, 2b, RBI), Victoria Nino (3-for-4, RBI), Heather Graff (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Leah Rybakowski (2-for-2, 3 RBI, 2b), Larkin (2-2, 2-0) earned this Upstate Eight Conference win. Graff (6 IP, 1 earned run, 3 strikeouts) was inside the circle for the win.
Girls soccer
Sycamore 3, Dundee-Crown 1: Trailing 2-0 at the half, Licia Keyes brought Dundee-Crown (0-2-1) closer with an unassisted goal, but the Chargers dropped this nonconference contest 3-1. In goal, Deanna Libricz tallied 12 saves.
St. Charles North 6, Jacobs 0: Close at the half, St. Charles North tallied 5 second half goals to run away with this 6-0 nonconference win over Jacobs (1-4) at the Pepsi Showdown. Alyssa Barnhard defended the net for the Golden Eagles blocking 8 shots on goal.
Neuqua Valley 2, Bartlett 0: It was a big night for Bartlett goalkeeper Erin Zaidman, who recorded 13 saves defending the net for the Hawks (2-1-1) as they fell to Neuqua Valley in Upstate Eight Conference action.
"Of the 13n saves Erin collected, 10 of them were saves that kept us in this game," said coach Heather Thomas. "It was one of the best games I have ever seen her play."
Boys volleyball
St. Edward d. Nazareth Academy: Behind a complete team effort, St. Edward (2-2) earned this nonconference win over Nazareth in three games (17-25, 25-20, 25-18).
Lucas Belcher (10 kills), Will Lytle (5 kills, 3 blocks), Jim Waclawik (9 kills), Miguel Martinez (29 assists), Tyler Vaughan (8 digs) and Jack Cholewa (18 digs) each had key contributions in the victory.
College baseball
ECC sweeps Morton: Elgin Community College (6-4, 2-0) kicked off ISCC action with a sweep over Morton winning by scores of 8-0 and 12-2. Andrew Burkett (2-1) got the Game 1 victory giving up no hits while striking out seven in 3 innings of work. Plate efforts were led by Matt Wietlispach (2-for-4, 2b), Trevor Rutkowski (2b), Ben Vincent (2b) and Brad Porto (2-for-4, 3 RBI).
In Game 2, the Spartans trailed 2-0 after one inning, but the offense picked up recording 12 runs on 14 hits while shutting down Morton's offense. Wietlispach (2b, HR), Greg Stolzenburg (2b), Rutkowski (3 doubles) and Brian Mason (2b) led the Spartan hitting barrage.
Working 3 innings, Jim VanSyckle (2-1) got the win allowing 2 runs (one earned) on one hit to go with five strikeouts.
College softball
ECC splits: Elgin Community College (1-5) picked up its first win of the season taking the front end of this double-header with Joliet Junior College in nonconference play. Jessica Schue got the win helping herself at the plate with a hit and an RBI. Casey Holtz (2-foro-3, RBI) and Megan McGovern (2 runs) each had key contributions.
In Game 2, the Spartans came up short losing 8-0. Amanda Price was the bright spot in the offense going 2-for-3. Holtz endured the loss.
