VanderWall, Lakes capture first victory
Lakes' baseball team got its first win of the season Wednesday.
Travis VanderWall pitched 6½ innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, and Brian Baiocchi recorded the final two outs, as the Eagles topped host Lake Forest 3-2.
Justin Hotle and Trey Williams led the way offensively for Lakes (1-2). Hotle was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, and Williams had 2 hits and a walk.
Wauconda 6, Zion-Benton 1: Josh Hartnett pitched a complete-game 3-hitter with 9 strikeouts, as the Bulldogs won their season opener.
Carmel 12, Waukegan 0: Bobby Lyne earned the win and aided his cause with a double, as the Corsairs rolled in their season opener.
John Zeffery also had a double for Carmel.
Highland Park 8, Grayslake North 1: Jimmy Risi went 3-for-4 for Highland Park, which limited Grayslake North to only 2 hits.
Jimmy Butler and Jordan Field had the Knights' hits.
Softball
Wauconda 9, CL Central 0: Sara Super had a no-hitter for 5¿ innings, as the Bulldogs won the season opener.
Super settled for a 1-hitter with 3 strikeouts. Katie Born paced Wauconda's offense by going 3-for-4 with 2 triples, and Kate Martino went 2-for-2 with 2 walks for the Bulldogs.
R-B 10, Grayslake North 8: Sam Fletcher and Amanda Leon each went 3-for-4 in the Knights' season-opening loss to visiting Richmond-Burton.
Grayslake North had 5 doubles, including a pair by Fletcher. Jamie Breitweiser, Carly Borders and Kelly Noesen also had doubles for the Knights, who are scheduled to visit Round Lake on Friday in a makeup game.
McHenry 4, Antioch 0: Melissa Ori tripled for the visiting Sequoits in their season-opening defeat.
Losing pitcher Allie Anttila gave up 3 earned runs.
Waukegan 11, Grayslake C. 1: Monika Wedick struck out 10 in suffering the loss for the Rams.
Alyssa Dorlack had a double for Grayslake Central.
Girls soccer
Round Lake 8, N. Chicago 0: April Barroso scored twice for the visiting Panthers in their season opener.
Round Lake also got goals from Joanna Paredes, Angelica Salgado, Kristin Lambert, Karla Romero, Wendy Campos and Neomi Blomberg. Assists went to Luba Vityk, Blomberg, Haley Vaughn, Salgado and Vanessa Almadovar. Angie Carey earned the shutout in goal.
Lake Zurich 3, Warren 0: Gina McCoy had a goal and an assist for the Bears, who picked up their first win of the season in the North Suburban Lake Division opener.
Hailey Chmela and Sarah Stauner also scored for Lake Zurich (1-3-2). Lauren Krzeminski and Molly Murrin also had assists. Maggie Eisenhuth made 5 saves in earning her third shutout.
Antioch 2, Grant 1: Kalli Krumpos had a goal and an assist for the Sequoits in the North Suburban Prairie Division match.
Jen Zak also scored for Antioch, while Christine Kwilosz added an assist.
Mundelein 5, Lakes 1: Nikki Allen stopped a penalty kick, and the Mustangs responded with 5 unanswered goals in the North Suburban crossover.
Kim Carroll scored twice and added an assist for Mundelein (6-0), which led only 1-0 at halftime. Ashley Begrowicz, Jennifer Miranda and Mandi Affolter also scored. Courtney Bestler and Miranda also had assists.
Boys volleyball
Stevenson d. Lake Forest: Matt Liwin had 8 kills and 2 solo blocks for the Patriots, who won their North Suburban opener 26-24, 21-25, 25-21.
Bryan Kessler and Brad Feiger added 5 and 4 kills, respectively, for Stevenson (2-4). Jason Giecek dished 23 assists on 41-of-41 setting. Harrison Kay had a team-best 8 digs for the Patriots.
Libertyville d. N. Chicago: Tom Hannum had 8 kills for the Wildcats in their 25-11, 25-23 win.
Nick Olson served for 6 points (2 aces) and lofted 4 assists, while Zach Sesterhenn also served for 6 points. Kyle Buss dished out 4 assists for Libertyville (1-1) in the North Suburban opener.
Vernon Hills d. Antioch: Herman Lynn slammed 7 kills and Keegan Harris pounded 6 for the Cougars in the North Suburban opener.
Lynn added 5 blocks, while Ethan Steinhaus totaled 20 assists. Jeff Achler led Vernon Hills with 9 digs. Alex Tartakovsky chipped in 4 kills, and Ernie Choi and Dave Siegel had 3 apiece.
"It's been a long time since we played a match, so it was good to see them settle down and find a rhythm," coach Chris Curry said. "I gave them our eighth different lineup, and we're on our fourth different setter. So, all things considered, I'm pretty happy."
Zion-Benton d. Lakes: Kevin Rice had 6 kills for the Eagles in their 25-21, 25-21 loss.
Girls track
Marist d. Carmel: Host Carmel (87) fell to Marist (108) but defeated Fenwick (57) and St. Joseph (21).
The Corsairs' winners were Shannon Howell (high hurdles), Hilary Halford (400 meters) and Megan Fowler (long jump).
Boys tennis
Lake Zurich 4, Schaumburg 3: Doubles proved the difference.
Lake Zurich received doubles wins from the teams of Mark Decanio/Erik Wolf (No. 1), Luke Mueller/Tyler Miller (No. 2) and Pat Flanagan/Pierce Romei (No. 3).
Dave Paulina won at third singles for the Bears.
Grayslake N. 5, Antioch 0: The Knights cruised to even their record at 1-1.
The singles winners were Nils Reimers (No. 1) and Peter Kopacz (No. 2). The doubles winners were Brian Hook/Drew Hauck (No. 1), Kevin Aukee/Keith Lilja (No. 2) and Marc Nethercote/Matt Davis (No. 3).
