McHenry County Legionnaires: McHenry County Legionnaires from all county posts are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the McHenry County Council at 7:30 p.m. today at American Legion McHenry Post 491, 1331 N. Riverside Drive in McHenry.

Baby Boomers Singles Club: The Baby Boomers Singles Club will host a dance Saturday at the newly remodeled Milk Pail Restaurant and Banquets, 14630 Route 25 in East Dundee

The "Beginner Night Club Two-Step Dance Lesson" will be from 8 to 8:45 p.m. with Greg Martin. It costs $3.

It will be followed by an open dance until 11:30 p.m. at $10 per person.

The DJ will be Scott Pastorino of At Your Service Entertainment, playing tunes from the 1950s-'70s.

The dress code is casual, but no jeans or gym shoes.

The dance will be held in the Garden Room at the Milk Pail. Look for "Singles Dance" sign.

Family Services: Michelle Durpetti, MSW, LCSW, with AdvantageEAP and coordinator of EAP Services at Family Service, will discuss procedures for using an EAP including voluntary and mandatory referrals on April 10. She also will share the dos and don'ts for HR representatives (and supervisors) and provide information to increase your awareness of possible alcohol/drugs effects in the workplace.

The breakfast meeting begins promptly at 7:45 a.m. and adjourns at 9:45 a.m. at the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center, 4100 Veterans Parkway in McHenry. Cost to members is $15; cost for nonmembers is $25, payable at the door.

Women's Leadership Network: Join the Women's Leadership Network organization for a speaker, networking and dinner event.

The organization will be meeting at 5:30 p.m. April 9 at Jimmy's Charhouse on Randall Road in Elgin .

McHenry County Chapter of AARP: The McHenry County Chapter of AARP will meet at 1:30 p.m. April 10 at The Fountains of Crystal Lake, on Route 31, one mile north of Route 176. The speaker will be Bob Mrachek of the Colonial Funeral Home on funeral planning.

Signal Hill DAR: Signal Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a Genealogy Workshop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 12 at the Barrington Area Library, Room "A" on first floor, 505 N. Northwest Hwy., Barrington.

Debbie McArdle, a member of Kishwaukee Trail Chapter NSDAR will present the program: "Do These Genes Make Me Look Fat." The presentation will show how DNA testing can be used in genealogy research.

Following the program, Helen Palmer and the DAR Membership Task Force, as well as chapter members, will be available to assist those who are interested in DAR membership.

Anyone who would like to know more about the NSDAR, interested in becoming a prospective member or researching their family history is invited to attend this free meeting.

A light breakfast and lunch will be served.

• Signal Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will welcome the spring season on April 15 at the Barrington Area Public Library, first-floor room B, 505 N. Northwest Hwy., Barrington.

The business meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. with a social period and refreshments to follow at noon.

At 1 p.m., Tom McCarthy will present a timely program "Conservation -- What We Can Do." McCarthy is the manager of the McHenry County Land and Facilities.

Hostesses for the day will be Pat Esposito of Sleepy Hollow, Bonnie Free of Barrington, Lois Lee of Barrington Hills, Janice McGrath of St. Charles and Jeanette Muench of Crystal Lake.

To be eligible for membership a woman must be no less than 18 years of age and able to prove her lineage to an ancestor who aided in the cause of the American independence through military, civil or patriot service. Club members will help prospective members trace their ancestry. A free lineage workshop, open to the public, will be held April 12 and private assistance also may be arranged.

B/NWCA: A popular and notable painting from the vast collection at the Art Institute of Chicago features four people at an all-night diner. They immediately arouse curiosity from the viewer who questions their identities, their relationship, their previous activities, etc.

This famous painting by Edward Hopper is titled "Nighthawks" and reflects a prominent style of his work which presents a still-life of average people engaging in routine activities.

Hopper's work is featured in a current exhibition at the Art Institute and members of the Barrington/Northwest Community Associates will have an opportunity to learn more about this phenomenal artist on April 17.

Members will travel to the Art Institute where Margaret Farr, art historian and coordinator in the museum's Education Department, will present a lecture titled "Edward Hopper: American Master."

Through a careful selection of visuals from the artist's most productive years, Farr will explain Hopper's techniques and illuminate his prodigious talents.

Lunch at Salvatore's will conclude this excursion. This event is for B/NWCA members only.

Members also will visit the Morton Auditorium. The fee is $40, which includes transportation, lecture, and lunch. Reservations are due by April 7. Members can send checks to Day Chair Mari Harrer, (847) 462-1963.

Pack 457: Cub Scouts from Cary Pack 457 are seeking alumni Scouts and leaders to help celebrate the pack's 50th anniversary during various scouting activities throughout 2008.

The oldest Cub Scout pack in Cary, Pack 457 was formed on June 27, 1958. Since then, hundreds of children and adults from Cary have participated in scouting activities through the pack.

The pack wants these alumni to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the pack by participating in 2008 pack activities, including the 50th Pinewood Derby and the 50th Blue and Gold Banquet.

Those who have previously participated in Cary Cub Scout Pack 457 as a Scout or a leader are urged to contact Teresa Sheehan, chairman of the Pack 457 50th Anniversary Committee, at (847) 639-3601 or Sheehan.scouting @comcast.net.

Fox Chapter Needlepoint Guild: Club will hold its annual luncheon and exhibit April 5 at Crystal Lake Country Club. Cocktails are at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is at noon.

After the luncheon, new officers will be installed. There also will be a display and discussion of projects for the following year. Each year members work on these projects and earn incentive pins, which will be handed out at the luncheon.

This is the guild's 26th year and now has more than 50 members.

Meetings are held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month, except December and April, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Algonquin.

The guild also has gone on mystery us trips, retreats, stitch-ins and some members attend the National ANG seminar each year.

This is a nonprofit learning and sharing organization of novice, intermediate and advanced needlepoint stitchers.

The group is interested in and dedicated to promoting the art of needlepoint through the study of history, uses and forms and to encourage creativity in adapting its form to modern usage.

Mothers & More: The eighth annual Spring Mothers & More KidStuff Resale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon April 5 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1023 S. McHenry Ave. at McHenry and Dartmoor, near Crystal Lake South High School, Crystal Lake.

The sale features more than 16,000 items from more than 130 sellers of gently used spring and summer children's clothing, toys and equipment at great prices. Admission fee of $1 per adult shopper or equivalent food pantry item will be donated to the food pantries. Food pantry patrons will be admitted free.

Proceeds from the sale benefit the Algonquin/LITH and Cary Grove Food Pantries plus support Mothers & More's activities and other outreach projects.

• Mothers & More of McHenry County will hold an Open House event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 21 at the Algonquin Public Library, 2600 Harnish Drive in Algonquin behind Target off Randall Road.

This group provides an array of monthly programs to support the many interests and needs of mothers as individuals. Women share experiences and develop friendships through social, informational and outreach programs, as well as events that include their children and families.

Mothers & More is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of mothers. It supports mothers as individuals and promotes the value of all of the work that mothers do.
