Briefs: 2 businesses caught selling alcohol to minors

Roselle police, along with the Illinois State Police Alcohol Countermeasures Enforcement Team, recently conducted an undercover operating targeting retailers that sell alcohol to minors. A total of 22 businesses were visited March 13. An employee at the Lynfred Winery and another at the La Hacienda de Roselle were charged with unlawful sale of alcohol to a minor. The employees were Lori Stengle of Bloomingdale who works for Lynfred Winery and Alvaro Jimenez of Chicago who works at La Hacienda.

Sex sting in Winfield

Winfield police arrested a 53-year-old Rolling Meadows man Monday during an Internet sex solicitation sting, authorities said Tuesday. Martin Freedberg was arrested after police said he arranged over the Internet to meet someone he thought was a 15-year-old girl. Freedberg was charged with a felony count of indecent solicitation of a child. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison. Freedberg, who has worked for the past 28 years as an Illinois High School Association referee for junior high and high school sports, is being held in DuPage County jail on a $150,000 bond. Investigators also obtained a search warrant to confiscate a computer from Freedberg's home.

Glendale Hts. garage fire

Glenside Fire Protection District firefighters battled a garage fire at a house at 267 Polo Club Drive Monday night, Deputy Chief Russ Wood said. The blaze started about 6:15 p.m. The cause is still under investigation, he said. Homeowners evacuated the home safely. There were no injuries. The damage, which included one car in the garage, totaled about $60,000, Wood said. The fire is not suspicious and appears to be accidental.

West Chicago industrial fire

A machine inside Advanced Urethane at 1850 Downs Drive in West Chicago caught fire about 9 p.m. Monday, fire officials said. The company makes and recycles carpet padding. The grinder used to recycle the carpeting caught fire, Deputy Chief Bob Hodge said. Even though the machine was fairly small and there wasn't much damage, a heavy amount of smoke filled the industrial building. Hodge said the same machine has caught fire twice before and the incident isn't uncommon. The building wasn't affected by the fire, he said.

Services for firefighter

A wake will be held Wednesday for rookie Darien-Woodridge firefighter Anthony Reynolds from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Brust Funeral Home, 415 N. Gary Ave., Carol Stream. Reynolds, 27, died Saturday while jogging near his home in Carol Stream. Reynolds served for four years as a part-time, paid-on-call firefighter for the Carol Stream Fire Protection District before being hired at Darien-Woodridge. He was sworn in last week and was to begin fire academy training this week. Reynolds is survived by his mother, Lourdeth, his father, Gary and one brother.

Naperbrook opens:

Naperville Park District's Naperbrook Golf Course opened for play this week, despite the sloppy weather. Although portions of the clubhouse remain under construction, the course and driving range at 22204 Hassert Blvd., Plainfield, are fully accessible. It will function as a "walking only" course this month. Discounts will be offered through the end of March, Director of Golf Services Ed Provow said. For details, visit naperbrookgolfcourse.org.

Schools host charity game

Naperville's Madison and Lincoln junior high schools have teamed up to raise money for Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Madison staff will play the Lincoln staff in a special charity/exhibition basketball game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Naperville Central High School, 440 W. Aurora Ave. Each school is selling tickets for $2 and building school spirit in other ways, such as selling T-shirts and rally flags. The Madison Home and School Organization will provide a concession stand at the game.

Naperville Unit District 203 recently honored its exemplary business partners. This year's honorees include Park National Bank, a partner with Mill Street Elementary School; the North Central College Cardinal Reading Buddies, a partner with Highlands Elementary School; FASTSIGNS, a partner with Kennedy Junior High and Naperville North High School; The Piket Team -- john greene Realtor, partners with Naperville Central High School; and the Heritage YMCA, a partner with District 203. Several new partners also were recognized, including Rico Enterprises, a partner with Naperville North High School; North Central College, a partner with Beebe Elementary School and Washington Junior High; Chicago a cappella, a partner with Naperville North; and Hard Rock Café Orlando, a partner with Naperville Central.

History museum grant

The Elmhurst Historical Museum has received a $1,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to fund a new exhibit on display from April 18 to May 26. The exhibit, entitled Going Places, chronicles the culture, evolution and demise of horse-drawn transportation from the early 19th century to the 20th century. The grant money will be used to expand the museum's program offerings.

Pharmacy gets makeover

Family Pharmacy, located in the Family Foods store in Carol Stream, will be moving next month to a new location at 942 Army Trail Road. A grand opening is planned for sometime in May. For more information, call Nancy Thomas at (630) 638-0995.
