• The eighth annual Self-Employment in the Arts conference will be Friday and Saturday at the Hilton Lisle/Naperville, 3003 Corporate West Drive, Lisle. The keynote speaker will be "Ziggy" cartoonist Tom Wilson. The event, aimed at helping artists build profitable careers, also will include workshops, panel discussions, gallery exhibits and portfolio reviews. The conference is open to all artists, including high school and college students. The event is sponsored by North Central College and the Coleman Foundation. The cost for one day is $60. Saturday

• Children ages 9 to 16 may audition for the musical "Robin Hood" from 3 to 5 p.m. March 1 at Steel Beam Theatre, 111 W. Main St., St. Charles. No appointments are necessary. Auditions will consist of singing, dancing and reading from the script. If children are cast in the production, tuition costs $195 which includes a script, costume, T-shirt and two free tickets to a performance. Scholarships are available based on need.
