Wheaton Warrenville South 60, Glenbard East 51
In the midst of a four-game losing streak, Wheaton Warrenville South's boys basketball team needed something positive.
The Tigers found it on the perimeter Monday night.
In a makeup game in the DuPage Valley Conference, WW South held off a late charge from Glenbard East to beat the Rams 60-51.
The Tigers broke the losing streak behind six 3-pointers, four that came in the third quarter including a pair by Byron Given.
After Glenbard East (11-10, 6-5) pulled within 26-24 on a Paul Sanders basket early in the third quarter, the Tigers (13-9, 5-6) took off on a 15-4 run to build a 41-28 lead.
Despite some late scares, the margin held up.
"We really did a good job, especially in the second half, of spreading them out," said Given, who scored 13 points. "That really helped us get out to a good start in the third quarter, and it kind of saved us down the stretch."
Glenbard East's pressure defense sparked a late rally from the Rams. Ben Trefilek nailed a pair of 3-pointers while Derak Stanback scored 7 of his team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Rams pulled within 55-49 with 1:58 left.
A pair of baskets by the Tigers' Kendrick Perry, who scored 15 points, helped extend the lead for good.
"We just didn't defend very well, we left too many guys open," said Rams coach Scott Miller. "It was just too little, too late for us."
Four players hit double figures for WW South, with Derek Babb and Dan Phillip each scoring 12 points. Phillip and Perry combined for 27 points off the bench.
Sanders, who shared foul trouble with Lee Skinner in the post, tallied 10 points for Glenbard East.
"It got down to 5, but we never went away," said Tigers coach Mike Healy. "We answered their bursts with our own bursts. We can beat some good teams when we knock down shots."
