Focus on Social Security

The DuPage branch of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill will feature speaker Jeffrey Rabin and a discussion of the Social Security disability law. The presentation begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the College of DuPage Student Resource Center, room 1450 A, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn. The series is free and open to the public. Valentines for Vets:

The Glenbard High School District 87 ACTS Committee and Glenbard Leadership Council will offer an opportunity to create Heartfelt Valentines for Veterans from Jan. 27 to Feb. 1. The committee will provide art materials, boxes and snacks for community groups. The College of DuPage will coordinate a visit by servicemen and women who are graduates of area high schools. High school students of the district and their parents may visit each of the high school cafeterias at 2:45 p.m. Jan. 30 to create valentines for hospitalized veterans and service personnel here and abroad. Valentines must be returned by Feb. 1 to the Glendale Heights Civic Center, 300 Civic Center Plaza. Donations of funds, snacks and art supplies can be directed to the PEP Foundation, 596 Crescent Blvd, Glen Ellyn. For details, call (630) 469-9100

Congressional forum on tap:

The grassroots group Hanover Township Democrats & Independents will sponsor a free forum for the Democratic primary candidates for the 6th and 8th Congressional districts from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Park Place Family Recreation Center, 550 S. Park Blvd., Streamwood. In the 6th District, Stan Jagla of Roselle and Jill Morgenthaler of Des Plaines are both scheduled to appear. They're vying to be the Democrat who challenges incumbent Republican Peter Roskam of Wheaton, who has no primary challenger. In the 8th District, Democratic incumbent Melissa Bean of Barrington is being challenged by Randi Scheurer of Lindenhurst. Scheurer is scheduled to attend; Bean will be in Washington, D.C., and is sending a staff member. Three Republicans also are running in their party's primary to take on Bean in November. They are Steve Greenberg of Long Grove, Kenneth Arnold of Gurnee and Kirk Morris of Gurnee. The public will be invited to ask questions at the Streamwood forum. The Itasca Community Library will host a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday to answer questions about its upcoming referendum. Officials will discuss the reason for the project, what the impact of the project will be for library users, the estimated cost of the project, and the cost to the taxpayers.
