Record electronically

Officials said the first electronic document was received Thursday at the Lake County recorder's office. The documents were quickly received via computer from First American Lenders Advantage in Ohio and officially recorded. "We are continually evaluating ways to improve the quality of our services, and we are confident that eRecording will enable us to more efficiently record documents, eliminate document filing errors, quickly correct any errors that do exist and actually increase document security," said Lake County Recorder Mary Ellen Vanderventer.

Congressional forum on tap

The grassroots group Hanover Township Democrats & Independents will host a free forum for the Democratic primary candidates for the 6th and the 8th congressional districts from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Park Place Family Recreation Center, 550 S. Park Blvd., Streamwood. In the 6th District, Stan Jagla of Roselle and Jill Morgenthaler of Des Plaines are scheduled to appear. They're vying to be the Democrat who challenges incumbent Republican Peter Roskam of Wheaton, who has no primary challenger. In the 8th District, incumbent Melissa Bean of Barrington is being challenged in the Democratic primary by Randi Scheurer of Lindenhurst. Scheurer is scheduled to attend; Bean will be in Washington, D.C. and is sending a staff member. Three Republicans also are running in their party's primary to take on Bean in November. The public will be invited to ask questions at the Streamwood forum. For more information, visit www.handionline.org.

Chess champ won't appear

The scheduled appearances of former chess world champion Anatoly Karpov in South Barrington tonight and in Oak Brook Saturday have been canceled. Organizers of the events said Karpov was unable to secure the necessary visa required to travel from Russia. Today, Karpov was to show off his talents against numerous Barrington students during simultaneous exhibition matches. U.S. chess champion of 2006 Alexander Onischuk, 2006 U.S. Open chess champion Yury Shulman and the 2006 U.S. women's chess champion Anna Zatonskih will still be attending Friday's exhibition. Saturday, Karpov was to speak at a seminar in Oak Brook. Organizers said refunds will be given to those who reserved tickets.
