Cooking class at library

Learn to cook with beer today during a free program at The Vernon Area Public Library, 300 Olde Half Day Road, in Lincolnshire. Set to run from 7 to 9 p.m., the class is free and for adults only. Register in person, at www.vapld.info or by calling the library at (847) 634-3650.

Zoning board canceled

The Fox Lake Zoning Board of Appeals meeting scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled. The next regular meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 in the chambers of the Fox Lake Village Hall, 66 Thillen Drive. For more information, call (847) 587-2151.

Citizens committee meets

The Fox Lake Library Citizens Referendum Committee will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Patryn residence, 36364 N. Hawthorne Lane, Fox Lake. Meet the candidates

The grassroots group Hanover Township Democrats & Independents, or HanDI, will host a free forum for the Democratic primary candidates for the 6th and the 8th Congressional districts. It will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Park Place Family Recreation Center, 550 S. Park Blvd., Streamwood. The list of candidates scheduled to attend has yet to be finalized. In the 6th District, Stan Jagla of Roselle is running against Jill Morgenthaler of Des Plaines to be the Democrat who challenges incumbent Republican Peter Roskam of Wheaton, who has no primary challenger. In the 8th District, Democrat incumbent Melissa Bean of Barrington is being challenged by Randi Scheurer of Lindenhurst. Three Republicans are also running in their party's primary to take on Bean in November. The public can ask questions during the forum. For more information, visit www.handionline.org.
