Briefs: Father can't see boys
A suburban Chicago father suspected of critically burning his two young sons has had an order of protection filed against him, prohibiting him from seeing the boys. DuPage County Juvenile Court Judge C. Stanley Austin filed the order Tuesday at the request of Assistant State's Attorney Joseph Ruggiero. Authorities say Kaushik Patel of Glendale Heights doused his sons with gasoline and set them ablaze on Nov. 18. The 34-year-old father and his sons are in the burn unit at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. Four-year-old Om and 7-year-old Vishv remain in drug-induced comas. Prosecutors plan to file criminal charges against Patel as his medical condition improves.
Luminary in Roselle
More than 100 houses in Roselle's Buttonwood subdivision are bringing back a neighborhood tradition by participating in a Holiday Luminary on Christmas Eve. They will place small bags with weighted candles along their sidewalk starting at dusk. The subdivision, directly behind Turner Park Pond, can be accessed via Irving Park Road and Prospect Street or at Roselle Road and Granville Avenue. Water commissioner quits
The DuPage Water Commission is down one member after Timothy Feltes stepped down. Feltes, a Wheaton resident, was appointed by the county in February 2004 to fill the District 4 seat on the board. That district covers Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights and portions of Wheaton. The commission is made up of 12 commissioners and a chairman. Six of the seats are appointed by the county and six are elected by municipal mayors and managers. Feltes said he is stepping down to spend more time with his family and pursue other personal interests.
Voter registration drive
The DuPage Election Commission is reminding residents the last day to register or transfer a registration for the Feb. 5 primary election is Jan. 8. Voters or potential voters may visit the commission's Web site at www.dupageelections.com or visit any municipal, library or township office for more information. Robert Saar, the commission's executive director, will speak at an upcoming DuPage Against War Now meeting Jan. 8 to discuss new election legislation and how it will affect voters in coming elections. He will be bringing a touch screen machine to explain and demonstrate. That meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Glen Ellyn Public Library at 400 Duane St.
Paper recycling program
Lisle residents now can recycle their old newspapers, magazines, mail, school assignments and office paper, and turn it into cash for Lisle Park District. The district has partnered with Abitibi Paper Retriever to collect paper and be paid for it. The yellow and green collection bins are located at the district's Community Center, 1825 Short St., and at Meadows Center, 5801 Westview Lane.
