The Glenside Public Library District is offering an Introduction to E-mail and Instant Messaging from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the library, 25 E. Fullerton Ave., Glendale Heights. The program is free. For details or reservations, call (630) 260-1550.

Glen Ellyn group to honor residents

The 2006-07 Recognition of Glen Ellyn Persons of Character will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, 535 Duane St., Glen Ellyn.

This year's honorees include Ronnie Pecover, Ron Leonard, Ray and Jeanna Essick, William Leensvart, Marion McKinney, Cleo Burtis, Karen Click and Debbie Rearick.

St. Francis to host its annual 5K run

St. Francis High School's Spartan Athletic Association will hold its second annual SAA 5K Fun Run and Walk Oct. 28 at Danada Forest Preserve, 3S501 Naperville Road, Wheaton.

The 5K for adults begins at 9 a.m. and the youth mile, for ages 12 years and younger, begins at 8:50 a.m. Race packets and T-shirts can be picked up from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 27 or prior to the race.

Awards will be given to the overall male and female winners, top achievers by age group and teams. Student teams can also compete for most creative costumes.

PetZone donates medical masks

Pet Zone of Winfield had an in-store fundraiser to purchase medical animal oxygen recovery masks for the fire departments in Winfield, Wheaton, West Chicago, and Carol Stream.

Each department will receive three masks for use in rescuing pets from fires or other emergencies where an oxygen mask is needed to treat an animal.

The store raised a total of $250 to purchase the masks.

Dist. 93 to offer school screenings

Carol Stream Elementary District 93 will hold preschool screenings for resident children ages 33 months to 5 years old, not in kindergarten, Monday mornings on these dates and locations during the 2007-08 school year:

• Monday, Dec. 10, Feb. 4 and March 10 at Cloverdale School, 1182 Merbach Drive, Carol Stream.

• Nov. 5, Jan. 7 and March 3 at Roy DeShane School, 475 Chippewa Trail, Carol Stream.

During the play-based screening session, staff members assess the child's readiness, social interactions, speech-language and fine and gross motor skills in a developmentally appropriate manner. Vision and hearing are also screened.

Appointments are required and can be made by calling the district office at (630) 893-9393.
