D-C comes back to stop Jacobs

Dundee-Crown girls volleyball coach Tracy Williams' message was stern but clear.

"After we lost the first game, coach Williams didn't talk about fundamentals or strategy," said D-C senior hitter Amanda Lutzow. "She just said we can't lose to these guys. We need to play better."

Lutzow and the rest of the Chargers responded to Williams' words of wisdom and rallied for a 20-25, 25-12, 25-22 win over District 300 rival Jacobs in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division match in Algonquin Tuesday night.

Lutzow was the main reason the Chargers (15-5, 3-2) were able to beat the pesky Golden Eagles (9-11, 1-4). The D-C senior blasted 18 kills to go along with 7 blocks and 2 aces.

"Amanda was just amazing tonight," said Williams. "She did a great job of hitting over the top and over their block. Anytime we got her a good set she put it away. Amanda had a great match."

Lutzow got plenty of help from her teammates as Kathleen Collingbourne blasted 8 kills and Stephanie Thorson delivered 5 kills. Setter Katie Cutinello had 30 assists.

After the losing the first game, the Chargers went right to work in Game 2.

With Lutzow dominating the net with 6 kills, the Chargers catapulted to a 12-3 advantage. Marissa Peterson's ace gave D-C a 9-point lead.

The Chargers kept building the lead and held a 20-5 advantage after a kill by Collingbourne.

Jacobs made it respectable and got to within 20-11 after an ace by Stacie Weinert.

But the Chargers regained the momentum and won the game on an ace by Peterson.

D-C led throughout Game 3, but Jacobs was always within striking distance.

The Chargers' biggest lead was 24-18 after an ace by Lutzow.

The Golden Eagles rallied behind 4 kills from Keri Bultman to get within 24-22.

Jacobs couldn't creep any closer as Thorson blasted a kill to give D-C the game and match.

"We didn't play the second game," said Jacobs coach Lisa Dwyer. "We didn't block at all."

Bultman paced Jacobs with 9 kills. Lauren Pigatto deposited 8 kills and Weinert and Klaudia Velazquez had 7 apiece. Amy Cavanaugh chipped in with 5 kills and Erica Liss delivered 3 kills.

Williams is happy with the win, but knows there is work to be done.

"I am proud of the girls that they didn't panic after we lost the first game, but we need to be more consistent," said the Charger coach. "We have to get back into the gym and work on being a more consistent team."
