Basketball

Cougars tryouts: Vernon Hills Lady Cougars Feeder Basketball for fifth to eighth graders will take place from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sept. 30, and 6:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 4 at Vernon Hills High School, 145 N. Hooked on Hoops: Hooked on Hoops, a youth basketball club, will hold its fall Wednesday sessions from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 at Fremont Middle School on Fremont Center Road west of Mundelein. Boys and girls of all ages and all school districts are welcome to attend.

The emphasis of the camp is skills development. Players will learn the fundamental and advanced skills of ball-handling, passing, dribbling and shooting. The fee for the Wednesday sessions is $60, and sign-up is on the first day of attending camp. Players should bring their own basketball. For information, call the Hoops hotline at (847) 566-8562.

Teams forming: Next Level Basketball Academy, located in the Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates area, is now forming fall and winter basketball teams for boys in fifth to 10th grade. Soccer

High school tryouts: Real Chicago FC will hold its 2007-08 High School U15 to U18 tryouts from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 21 at Maine West High School, 1755 S. Wolf Road, Des Plaines. The fields are located behind the football stadium. Players should arrive one-half hour early to register and bring birth certificate, wallet-size photo, completed IYSA waiver, shin guards, ball and water bottle.

All players will go through a normal training session with the coaching staff, which includes technical drills, conditioning exercises and tactical games. Indoor training begins in November, and the spring season in the NISL runs through June 2008.

Softball

Fastpitch tryout: Northern ICE Fastpitch will hold an additional tryout from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 29 at Cook Park, 600 N. Main St., Wauconda. The 10U, 12U and 14U teams are all looking for several players. For information, call Rick Eklund, at (847) 650-7910.

Softball

One-day clinic: Fastball USA will host a one-day softball clinic Nov. 17 for coaches and players at 137 Diversey, Elmhurst. The UIC Flames coaching staff, Tom Grey, Sarah O'Malley and Allison Aguilar, along with UIC Flames players will be on hand. The division I softball program will hold a coaches clinic from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and a players clinic from noon to 3 p.m. The clinic will cover the fundamentals of softball in several skill areas including infield and outfield defensive, plus offensive skills of hitting, bunting and slapping.

Softball

Thunder tryouts: Mundelein Thunder will hold tryouts Oct. 13 for the girls 10-and-under travel team at Carl Sandburg School softball fields, Hawley and Midlothian Road, Mundelein. All girls who want to play fastpitch softball who will be at least 8 years old on Jan. 8, 2008 are eligible.

Players should bring a softball glove, cleats, their own bat and batting helmet if they have one. Catchers should bring their own gear if they have it. Equipment will also be available for their use.

Volleyball

Fall camps: Sky High Volleyball will hold "Volleykids," a fall camp for Juniors in fourth to eighth grade Sunday evenings from Oct. 7 to Dec. 16 at the following locations:

• Sixth to eighth grade: 7 to 8:30 p.m., Libertyville, and 6 to 7:30 p.m., Prairie Stone

• Fourth to eighth grade: 6 to 7:30 p.m., Crystal Lake.

The cost is $120 per athlete for the 10-week sessions, which include 15 hours of instruction. Athletes are split into separate groups based on ability and receive a complimentary T-shirt. Sky High provides all the coaches. Each week athletes receive one hour of on-court instruction and 30 minutes of game-like situations.

Volleyball

Side Out tryouts: Side Out Volleyball Association, an area Junior Olympic Volleyball Program, will hold tryouts for boys and girls at DuPage Training Academy, 115 Alexandra Way, Carol Stream, on the following days: Boys and girls 10 to 14 and under tryouts will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 2 and 8, and Girls 15, 16, 17, 18 and under from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 21 and 7 to 8 p.m. Oct. 26. A waiver must be signed by parent or guardian before the tryout.
