Batavia volleyball sweeps Knights; West Aurora golf sets new record

Batavia's girls volleyball team held off Kaneland 29-27, 25-16 Thursday night in Maple Park.

The first game started out tight as the Knights' attack gave the Bulldogs problems. But Batavia hung tough.

"It was a little ugly early on," said Bulldogs coach Lori Trippi-Payne. "But in the second game, our offense stated putting it together."

Indeed, Batavia jumped ahead early in Game 2 and though Kaneland scored some late points, it never mounted a serious threat.

Batavia (5-5, 3-1) was led by Kristin Hoffman's 17 assists, 5 digs and 4 aces. Melissa Norville added 6 digs, 2 blocks and 4 kills.

For the Knights (2-8, 1-3), Jessica Lubic had 11 assists, 4 kills and 3 digs. Brittany Nelson finished with 5 kills and 4 blocks.

St. Charles North d. Bartlett 25-19, 25-16: The North Stars (8-3) remained undefeated in three conference matches with their win in Bartlett. Elin Smith finished with 7 assists, 3 kills, 3 aces and 3 digs. Rachel Huber added 7 kills and Annie Stoermer set 12 assists.

Boys soccer

Marmion 4, Downers Grove North 1: The Cadets (5-4-1) won another game in the Pepsi Showdown on the strength of three second-half goals. Ralph Palmeri scored twice and Armando Hermosillo and Pablo Del Toro added one each. Ryan Hunt made 4 saves in goal for Marmion.

Wheaton Academy 6, Oswego 0: Lucas Young and Andrew Knighten both scored twice for the Warriors (4-1-2) in the Pepsi Showdown. They play St. Charles North in the next round Saturday.

Boys golf

West Aurora 144, WW South 154:ŒFive days after setting a new school record for an 18-hole tournament, West Aurora established a new benchmark for a nine-hole dual-meet score.

Jeff Etter and Chad Becker fired a combined 69 with under-par rounds of 34 and 35, respectively, while Kurtis Luedtke and Kyle McCradic were at 37 and 38.

With its even-par 144-154 victory over Wheaton Warrenville South Thursday at Orchard Valley, the Blackhawks eclipsed the previous record of 148 set in 2003.

"They now have the 18-hole record and the nine-hole record," said West Aurora coach Jay Bauer. "It's all relative, but this is clearly the best team I've had in my 15 years."

St. Charles East 161, Lake Park 176: Chris Niemiec shot 1-over 36 at Royal Fox in the Saints' (7-2, 5-1) win over the Lancers. Tyler Deetjen finished second overall with a 41.

Geneva 164, DeKalb 164: In the WSC dual meet, the Vikings got the win on a fifth score tiebreaker. Cole Oostuizen tied for medalist honors with a 2-over 38 at Kishwaukee.

Girls tennis

St. Charles North 7, Lake Park 0: The North Stars won all seven matches in straight sets. Second singles Megan Gow and second doubles Lauren Drawbridge and Carly Dutkiewicz shut out both their opponents.

Batavia 6, Yorkville 1: Alexa Schofield, Kim Sawyer and Kristen Sapyta all won singles matches for the Bulldogs (4-3, 2-0).

Kaneland 6, Marengo 1: The Knights improved to 5-3 in dual meets. Holly Hartmann won first singles 6-4, 6-0 and April Runde took second singles 6-1, 6-2.

Rosary 4, Marian 1: Keyly Knechtel and Angelina Goheen took first doubles for the Royals (6-6, 1-0), winning 12 of 13 games. Emily Reuland won first singles in straight sets.

Girls golf

St. Francis 164, Geneva 173, St. Charles North 199: Kayla Stodard of St. Francis led all golfers with a 3-over 38 at Mill Creek. Kristin Cagney shot 42 for Geneva and Molly Fremgen paced the North Stars with a 45.

St. Charles East 164, Waubonsie Valley 172:ŒThe Saints improved to 4-1 in the Upstate Eight with this win at St. Andrews. Jenny Niemiec led the team with a 37, followed by Rachael Edwards at 38.
