Suburbs remember 9/11, honor victims

Bartlett: A remembrance ceremony, 7 p.m. today at the Victory Centre of Bartlett, 1101 W. Bartlett Road, led by a joint color guard of the Bartlett VFW Post 11018 and American Legion 1212. Bartlett Mayor Catherine Melchert dedicates the newly installed flagpole; local Boy Scouts will work on an Eagle Scout garden project at Victory Centre; The Bartlett Adult Chorus will do patriotic selections. Des Plaines: Des Plaines fire and police departments, American Legion Post 36, VFW Post 2992 and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 311 will host a "Patriot Day" ceremony at 8:30 a.m. today outside the Des Plaines Civic Center, 1420 Miner St. Ceremony will include an honor and color guard, a prayer led by St. Mary Church, words from Mayor Tony Arredia, keynote address by state Sen. Susan Garrett, and the National Anthem sung by Caitlin and Amberly Glitz of Willows Academy. Taps will be played by the father-and-daughter duo, Joel and Alissa Laessig and members of Bugles Across America. Parking available in Metropolitan Square Garage.

Hanover Township: Hanover Township is asking all township residents to observe a moment of silence at 9:37 a.m. today to reflect upon the lives lost and heroic sacrifices made.

Hoffman Estates: Schaumburg Fire Lt. John Schneidwind, a Hoffman Estates resident and a Chicago-area responder sent to ground zero to help with rescue and recovery after the 9/11 attacks, will speak and show a slideshow about his experiences. Mount Prospect: Ceremony starts at 9 a.m., at the Mount Prospect Public Safety Building, 112 E. Northwest Hwy., on the fire department apparatus floor. Ceremony includes a welcome and posting of colors by the Mount Prospect Fire Department Honor Guard, an invocation by the Rev. Russ Bechtold of Northwest Assembly of God Church and remarks from Fire Chief Michael Figolah, Police Chief John Dahlberg and Mayor Irvana Wilks.

Schaumburg: Army Col. Jill Morgenthaler, the governor's homeland security adviser and chief of staff for public safety, will discuss "Homeland Security: How Prepared Are We?" at the Schaumburg Business Association's monthly Good Morning Schaumburg event from 7:30-9 a.m. today at Chandler's Banquets, 401 N. Roselle Road. Open to the public. Tickets are $23 for members and $25 for others; tables of eight are $160. To reserve a seat, call (847) 885-8800 or go to schaumburgbusiness.com. Walk-ins welcome, but tables must be reserved by 5 p.m. today.

Streamwood: The public is invited to join the fire department at any of its three stations this morning for a brief remembrance ceremony. All personnel will be called to attention at 8:58 a.m., followed by a bell ringing at 8:59 a.m. A moment of silence will be followed by a time for either firefighters or the public to make comments. The department's training throughout the rest of today will reflect the type of skills and efforts that were required in New York six years earlier. The stations are at 1204 S. Park Ave., 900 W. Irving Park Road and 1095 E. Schaumburg Road.
