Arts Festival: Chicago's fourth Annual Orthodox Christian Arts Festival will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 6 outdoors at Most Holy Mother of God Monastery, Route 45 and Sunshine Avenue, Third Lake. (near Gurnee Mills). Iconography, mosaic, woodcraft, jewelry, Byzantine and salvonic chant, youth activities and more will be included. Congregation Beth Judea: The Congregation Beth Judea will hold a Selichot Dessert Reception in the synagogue's Social Hall at 9:30 p.m. today. A Selichot Service will follow at 10:30 p.m. in the main sanctuary. As is the custom, all services at Beth Judea, except for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, are open to the entire community.
• Congregation Beth Judea will hold a Shop & Share Days fundraising drive at all Jewel-Osco stores Monday-Wednesday. When you present a Shop & Share identification slip at the time of purchase, Jewel-Osco will donate 5 percent of all purchases to the Congregation Beth Judea General Fund. Shop & Share identification slips are available at the synagogue.
• Congregation Beth Judea announces another class in its fall semester Adult Academy, the Men's Club Hebrew Literacy Class. In this beginner's class, instructors Sandy Victor and Howie Goodman will teach how to read Hebrew regardless of level of previous instruction, through a 12-week program from the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs. The class is open to any adult.
The class will meet at the synagogue on Tuesday evenings from 8 to 9 p.m. Classes will be held Sept. 18 and 25; Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30; Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27; and Dec. 11. "Graduation" will be at Friday Shabbat services, Dec. 14.

Congregation B'nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim: The congregation will hold a ground-breaking ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 30 at the location for its new temple and high school at Pine Street and Lake-Cook Road in Deerfield. At noon, the Chicagoland Jewish High School will be dedicating its new building with the highlight "walking" the Torah from Morton Grove to the new site (adjacent to the temple).
The Federated Church of Wauconda: The church at 200 S. Barrington Road (Route 176 and Barrington Road), will have its fall rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday to Sept. 15. First Church of Christ, Scientist: The church is at 240 Park Place in Libertyville, which is across from National City Bank. Sunday services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday School is held at the same hour for children and young people up to the age of 20.
Also, there is Wednesday midweek meetings at 7:30 p.m. Here attendants give gratitude for the help and blessings that their growing understanding of God has brought into their lives. All are welcome to attend services.
Fox Lake Baptist Church: The church at 27430 W. Nippersink Road, Ingleside, offers a contemporary worship service with a relevant message from the Bible at 10 a.m. Sunday.
Nursery is available as well as a Bible-based program for children ages kindergarten through sixth grade during the morning worship service.
High school youth (H2O) generally meet on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. Junior high students (CLAY) meet on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m.
Awana Ministries for children, ages kindergarten through sixth grade, begins on Wednesday, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
A men's group meets on Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. There are various ministries for women throughout the year.

Grace Lutheran Church: The church will hold "Blessings from Around the World" Church Picnic Sunday following the 10 a.m. worship service. Plan an afternoon of food with an international flair, bingo and a "Treasure Hunt Around the World" for the kids. All are welcome. • Grace Lutheran Church offers two worship services each Sunday beginning Sept. 16. A traditional worship service is offered at 8:30 a.m. A blended contemporary service is offered at 10 a.m. Children's ministries for age 4 to sixth grade will be offered during 10 a.m. worship., beginning Sunday. Children do not have to be members to attend Children's Ministries. Communion is served on the first and third Sunday of each month. Coffee fellowship is offered following each worship service in Cafe Grace. All are invited to join for worship and fellowship.
Hadassah North Shore: A Mah Jongg Tournament will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at Michael's Red Hots, Route 22 and Buffalo Grove Road, Buffalo Grove. Dairy lunch is included. Immanuel Church: Immanuel Church, 2300 Dilleys Road in Gurnee, offers two identical worship services at 9 and 10:45 a.m.
Kids' World provides a safe and fun environment for children from birth through fifth grade during all services. Midweek evening ministries include J.A.M. (sixth- through eighth-grade students) and IMPACT (high school) on Wednesdays. Small groups for men meet on Tuesday mornings and women's Bible studies are available on Wednesday mornings. Kirk of the Lakes Presbyterian Church: The Mundelein church will hold its fall kickoff celebration Sunday. Immediately following the 9:30 a.m. worship service, there will be an All-American Cookout and fun and games for young and old alike. The kickoff celebrates the beginning of the Sunday school year and a year of learning and growing through the message of the Gospel. All are invited to praise and celebrate. Lake Forest College: Islamic scholar and Duke University Professor of Religion Bruce B. Lawrence will deliver a talk titled "Islam at the Crossroads: In the Media, in the Academy, at Home and Abroad" at Lake Forest College Sunday, as part of the College's Sesquicentennial Lecture Series. Nachman Scholar Series with visiting scholars Dr. Frank Tachau and Rabbi Ezra Spicehandler will be 7:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 15, 22, 29 and Nov. 5. No charge but registration is required. NSCI Brotherhood speaker series will be at 9 a.m. Oct. 21, with Consul General Barukh Binah of the Consulate General of Israel to the Midwest. A seminar on environmental issues with Rabbi Hertbert Bronstein will be at 9:15 a.m. Oct. 14. NSCI Sisterhood program with WRI Lilith Salon will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 11.

Prairie Circle Unitarian Universalist Congregation: Join Laura Hebert, director of religious education, and the Prairie Circle Unitarian Universalist Congregation for worship services at 9:15 a.m. Sunday. Come celebrate a fall ingathering with a special intergenerational water Communion service. Bring the water you have gathered from your summer travels as we combine our individual experiences into a communal celebration. St. Joseph Church: The church in Libertyville is offering a five-week Scripture Mini Course on the book of Revelation presented by Fr. Bill Burton, OFM. The sessions start Sept. 27 and will continue every Thursday evening through Oct. 25. All classes will be held in the Formation Center from 7 to 8:30 p.m. There is a fee of $20 to attend this series. • St. Joseph Church in Libertyville is offering a program called Understanding Catholicism 101 which will meet every other month for four times beginning in September. It will use the book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Catholicism" by Bob O'Gorman and Mary Faulkner. There are two choices for these classes: Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11 a.m. or Thursday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. All sessions will be held in the Formation Center and the cost for this series is $20, which includes the cost of the book. The dates and topics are: Sept. 19/20: What's a Catholic?; Nov. 14/15: Putting the "ism" in Catholicism; Jan. 23/24: Catholic Identity; and March 5/6: Imagination and Prayer. St. Lawrence Episcopal Church: The church will hold its second annual Lobster Boil Sept. 22. The 1¼ lb. lobsters are shipped directly from New England and arrive fresh that Saturday morning. You may order your lobsters either live or steamed. Lobsters may be picked up at St. Lawrence at 5, 5:30, 6, 6:30 or 7 p.m.
Lobsters must be pre-ordered and the cost is $20 per steamed lobster, $16 per live lobster, by check (in advance) payable to St. Lawrence Episcopal Church.

On Sept. 23, St. Lawrence will host Father Joseph Garang Atem, assistant to the bishop of the Diocese of Renk, Episcopal Church of Sudan, and principal of Renk Bible School.
Father Joseph will speak at the morning worship services at 7:30 and 9 a.m. and the adult form at 10:10 a.m. St. Lawrence will also host an afternoon reception from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Parish Hall.

St. Martin de Porres: Cardinal George will be the main celebrant at a Mass at 9 a.m. Sept. 18 to open the school year with students, faculty and staff of St. Martin de Porres High School, 501 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Waukegan. Cardinal George will tour the school following the Mass.
St. Matthew Lutheran Church: Apocalypsis Jesu Christus is a 30-session, in-depth study into the Book of Revelation. Lutheran Church Charities will host classes on Mondays starting Monday at 6 a.m. at the Harris Bank Building in downtown Palatine and at 9:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Quentin and Old McHenry roads in Hawthorn Woods. The course is also available to be taken solely on the Internet. Classes are non-denominational and are open to anyone regardless of church (or lack of) affiliation. • St Matthew Lutheran Church, 24500 N. Old McHenry Road, Hawthorn Woods, has arranged with Grandmaster Yury Shulman to provide chess lessons for the community at St. Matthew on Thursdays from 5.30 to 6.30 every week starting in September.
The class is open to any beginning chess player ranging in ages from 5 to 95 years.

Shepherd of the Lakes Church: The Last Chance Music Series has changed names and locations. Beginning Sunday, it will be known as The Vine music series and will be held at The Vine Martini and Wine Bar, located at 101 Center St. in Grayslake The series continues to feature contemporary Christian music from 7 to 9 p.m. the second Sunday of each month. OneTwentyTwo will perform Sunday.

• Shepherd of the Lakes Church has new weekend service times. Worship times are now at 5 p.m. Saturday (contemporary) and on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. (traditional) and 10:15 a.m. (contemporary). The United Protestant Church of Grayslake: Members of the Grayslake community looking for a high-quality Christian education program are invited to the United Protestant Church of Grayslake Sunday for a Christian education open house from 9:15-10:15 a.m.
Parents with children up to age two are can tour the nursery facilities and meet the Cradle Roll committee. Kids age three through sixth grade can head to the lower level Fellowship Hall to register for the Journeys in Faith Christian education program. Parents and kids can have a snack, meet the teachers, learn about the Operation Christmas Child mission project and have the balloon man make a balloon animal for them.
Pastors David Russell and Orrell Ruth will hold a "Blessing of the Backpacks." Children are invited to bring their school backpacks in for a special blessing and to receive a cross to attach to their backpacks.
Information on youth education and fellowship programs will also be available. Middle and high school students are invited to the newly redecorated loft on the second floor to find out what youth will be exploring on their faith journeys this year and to learn about the schedules for youth fellowship. Youth classes are offered for seventh- through 12th-graders, and youth fellowship (youth group) is for fifth- through 12th-graders.
Also at the open house, adults are invited to a check out variety of classes and Bible study programs for adults at the Park Avenue House, located adjacent to the church building.
Regular hours resume Sunday, with worship at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. Sundays with Christian education for all ages at 9:30. Childcare is provided.

• The public is invited to attend a Christian music concert on Sept. 15 by Bryan Sirchio, an award-winning Christian singer/songwriter and recording artist from Madison, Wis. The 7 p.m. concert will be held in the sanctuary of the United Protestant Church of Grayslake, located at the corner of Park and Whitney in downtown Grayslake.
Sirchio's music is diverse in style, ranging from gentle congregational choruses to rousing upbeat material for teens, to fun interactive songs for young children. • Get ready to eat your fill of homemade spaghetti at the annual Spaghetti Dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at the United Protestant Church of Grayslake. For $20, a whole family can enjoy a homemade meal that includes spaghetti with a secret-recipe sauce, coleslaw, garlic bread, drinks and desserts. And for vegetarians, new this year is an option for a meatless marinara spaghetti sauce. Single prices for adult meals are $6, seniors are $5, children ages 5-12 are $4 and kids age 4 and under eat free.

First Church of Christ, Scientist: The church at 421 E. Main St., Barrington, offers an opportunity to share in blessings and gratitude on Wednesday evenings.
Beginning at 7:30 p.m. each Wednesday a hymn is sung, readings are given and then the meeting is open to the congregation to share how prayer and a trust in God has brought healing, wholeness and resolution to all kinds of challenges including addictions, health problems, relationship difficulties and employment needs. Plan to join in this healing hour.
