Hundreds without power

About 1,400 ComEd customers lost power at 2 p.m. Thursday, but about half were restored within an hour, a ComEd spokeswoman said. The outage knocked out power to more than 1,400 customers in Algonquin, Carpentersville and West Dundee. Power was restored to about half of those customers by 3 p.m. ComEd crews are on site working to restore electricity to the other half. ComEd did not have an estimate for when the work would be complete. The cause of the outage is under investigation.

Judge upholds indictments

A McHenry County judge upheld indictments Thursday against a pair of former police officers charged in an off-duty beating outside a Fox Lake tavern. Judge Joseph Condon ruled that county prosecutors did not violate pre-trial discovery rules in regard to what defense lawyers say is missing evidence in the case, saying there is no proof authorities acted in bad faith or whether the items would clear the defendants of wrongdoing. The decision keeps the cases of former Spring Grove police officers Ronald L. Pilati, 35, of South Barrington, and Jerome L. Volstad, 42, of Cary, on track for trial next month. Authorities say they, along with fellow ex-cop Brian Quilici, handcuffed and beat a man Feb. 20, 2005, outside KC's Cabin in Fox Lake. Quilici, 35, of Lisle, was convicted of five felony charges in August 2006 and is serving a two-year prison sentence.
