Longtime elected official and current Algonquin Township Trustee Lowell Cutforth announced Monday he will be seeking a seat on the McHenry County Board in next year's election. A Republican from Fox River Grove, Cutforth will be seeking one of two seats up for election in board District 1, which represents the south and eastern portions of Algonquin Township. The seats up for election now are held by Republicans Dan Shea and Marc Munaretto. Shea already has announced he will not seek another 4-year term. Before joining the Algonquin Township Board, Cutforth served in the Fox River Grove Elementary School District 3 Board of Education for 16 years.
Peace vigil today in Elgin
Members of MoveOn.org will hold a peace vigil from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today on the Kimball Street bridge over the Fox River in Elgin. Group members plan to read the names of American soldiers killed this year in Iraq and Afghanistan in an effort to urge Congress to vote to the end the war in September. The vigil is part of national Take A Stand Day, which is organized by the Americans Against Escalation in Iraq coalition.
'Singing in the Rain'
Elgin's Cultural Arts Commission has rescheduled its showing of "Singing in the Rain," which was supposed to run earlier this month as part of the group's summer film series. The 1952 comedy musical will now be shown starting at dusk Saturday in Elgin's Festival Park, at Grove Avenue and Prairie Street near the Grand Victoria Casino.
Cops to look for DUI drivers
Illinois State Police and Elgin police Wednesday evening will be on the lookout for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or with suspended or revoked licenses. The roadside safety check is part of the "You Drink and Drive, You Lose" campaign. Any motorists arrested that night in Elgin will also likely have their vehicles impounded, and have to pay an additional $250 impound fee under a new policy passed earlier this year by the Elgin City Council.
