Storm scores 1st varsity win

The South Elgin boys soccer team not only gained its first varsity win Monday, the Storm did it in a big way.

Playing Yorkville in the Burlington Central tournament, South Elgin walked away with an 8-0 triumph against the Foxes, who are in the first year of their boys soccer program.

"They are kind of a mirror image of us last year," said South Elgin coach Mark Neville of the Foxes. "But it was fun to see all the smiles on our guys' faces today. It's been a long time coming so it's nice that it finally happened."

The Storm (1-1) scored 4 goals in each half. Mike Alfini opened the scoring unassisted in the 10th minute. Elioth Ibarra (Javier Rojo assist), Rojo (James Hollander assist) and Hollander (Ernesto Caballero assist) led the Storm to a 4-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, Caballero scored twice and had an assist, Hollander added another goal, Hugo Urrutia had a goal, Rojo added another assist and Jake Shibona had an assist.

Luis Abonce and Chris Baker shared duties in the goal for the Storm, combining for 2 saves.

Cary-Grove 8, Westminster Christian 1: In the St. Edward Tournament, the Trojans rolled to an easy win over Westminster. In the first half for Cary-Grove (2-0) Kyle Blank managed to put in 2 goals off assists from Andy Roberts and Taylor Clarke. Teammate Calvin Brown also scored on an assist from Blank. Brady Huddleston scored the Warriors' only goal in the second half. The Trojans were led by Tyler Cuchna, who scored the fourth goal of the game on an assist by Phil Hansen. Kevin Matovina scored with help from Connor Keady, who also managed to score a goal off an assist from Hansen. Chris Barbaro scored and was assisted by Brown. Elliot Ireland finished up with the final goal. Keenan Walsh was in goal with 3 saves for the Trojans while Westminster's Dan Graves had an excellent game tallying 17 saves. Westminster is now 0-3 for the season.

St. Joseph 3, Streamwood 1: Streamwood fell short in this Addison Trail Tournament game. Streamwood's only goal was scored by Ivan Arce with an assist from Matt Rasinski. In goal for Streamwood was Juan Ortiz who collected 6 saves.

Newark 4, Elgin Academy 0: Elgin Academy suffered a nonconference loss to Newark Monday. Not only did the Hilltoppers (0-1-3) suffer a tough loss but also may have suffered the loss of a teammate as well. Leading scorer and top player Jackson Rudolph severely injured his ankle in the first half of the game and was sent to the hospital. In goal for Elgin Academy was Brandon Cork with 7 saves.

Hampshire 3, Belvidere North 1: Hampshire defeated Belvidere North in nonconference play. Junior Makinde scored 2 of the 3 goals for the Whip-Purs. with one on an assist from Juan Martinez. Shay Hauck also scored and was assisted by Makinde.

"Juan Martinez played a great game for us tonight on defense. If everyone on our team had Juan's attitude, we would have the makings of a pretty special team," said Hampshire coach Pat O'Brien. Cameron Rath was in goal for the Whip Purs with 8 saves.

Crystal Lake South 5, Johnsburg 2: The Gators were led by Jordan Innis, who scored 2 of the 5 goals put on the board to defeat Johnsburg in nonconference play. Matt Zaluckyj also scored 2 goals, getting assists from Jim Carlson and Innis. Teammate Kevin Nowak scored on an assist from Carlson as well. Jeff Lemberger had 1 save while in goal for the Gators.
