The Wheaton Municipal Band presents Sheridan, Sousa and the Sousaphone

The Wheaton Municipal Band moves indoors for its final concert of the 2017 season. On Saturday, August 5, at 8:00 p.m. in Edman Chapel at Wheaton College, the Wheaton Municipal Band teams up with renowned tuba soloist Patrick Sheridan to present an exciting show.

The indoor concert gives the band a chance to show off on a stage in a hall with quality acoustics. In addition, the audience can relax in air-conditioned comfort. After weathering the outdoor concert season, the loyal audience gets a break from the rain, the heat, and the bugs. But it is the quality music and showmanship that brings this incredible audience to the Wheaton Municipal Band concerts week after week.

The indoor concert features a true showman, Patrick Sheridan. The tuba is not usually thought of as a solo instrument, but Sheridan's charisma and amazing musicianship partner together to wow an audience. Born in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Sheridan studied with the Arnold Jacobs, the famous tuba player from the Chicago Symphony. At the age of 20, Sheridan became the youngest tuba player in the "President's Own" Marine Band. Playing the tuba requires a huge amount of air and breath control. Many wind players, from flute to trumpet study with tuba players to understand the intricate mechanics of breathing. Sheridan (co-authored with Sam Pilafian) the Breathing Gym a method which helps all wind instrument players accomplish ultimate breath control Now in demand as a tuba soloist, clinician and conductor throughout the globe, Sheridan has performed more than 3000 concerts in over 50 countries around the world. His performances have included concerts at the White House, NBA Half-time shows and the Hollywood Bow, the NBC's Today Show and NPR's All Things Considered. Sheridan is thrilled to join the Wheaton Municipal Band.

The program includes serious band literature, such as Conga del Fuego by Marquez, and Carnival Overture by Antonin Dvorak, fabulous tuba arrangements of Gabriel's Oboe, Flight of the Bumblebee and Sway, plus Sousa Marches and Band favorites.
