Celebrate America's Freedom with the Wheaton Municipal Band

Start your July 4th celebration early with the Wheaton Municipal Band Concert on Thursday June 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Park Band Shell in downtown Wheaton. Nothing stirs the patriotic spirit like the music of a full concert band. The Wheaton Municipal Band, under the direction of Dr. Bruce Moss, masterfully performs patriotic favorites. In addition, The Dixie Cups, a smaller Dixieland band, starts out the evening at 6:00 p.m. with the energized sound of Dixieland Jazz. Garth Anderson, Steve Klaus, Daryl Beese, Robert Lustrea, Kurt Bonamer, Bill Morris, Gail Sonkin and Andrew Packer, all members of the Wheaton Municipal Band, come together to play in the Dixie Cups.

When the full Wheaton Municipal Band takes the stage, the program includes a work by Ryan Nowlin, one of the WMB's favorite composers. He has been the Assistant Director First Lieutenant to "The President's Own" United States Marine Band since 2010. Before that he studied at Bowling Green University in Ohio under Dr. Bruce Moss. The WMB performs Nowlin's stirring Let Freedom Ring. In addition, music for the evening includes all time favorites: Americans We, America the Beautiful and Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever.

You don't want to miss the Wheaton Municipal Band's exciting rendition of The1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky. How did Russian Overture celebrating czarist patriotism become one of the symbols of American Independence Day? The answer is that music is timeless and transcends politics. The rousing patriotic fervor of the chimes, the brass fanfare and the overwhelming vibrations of the percussion section move audiences no matter what their nationality.

Featured on the program are two long-standing Wheaton Municipal Band performers, Carolyn Lloyd and James Garcia, playing Andante and Rondo by Albert Franz Doppler. a flute duet. James Garcia, the band's principal clarinetist, switches to flute for the solo. "I thought there would be a little bit of novelty having the band's principal clarinetist perform with the ensemble on flute," said Garcia. "Last year I had to the opportunity to buy a high end handmade flute and enjoy any chance I get to play it."
